Over the last several days, residents in at least 10 states have reported receiving mysterious packets of seeds in the mail, almost all of which appear to have come from China.

The packages have prompted warnings from state agriculture departments, who say recipients should not plant the seeds as they may be an invasive species.

NATIONWIDE REPORTS: People in several states mailed unsolicited packets of seeds that may be from China, officials say

The Delaware Department of Agriculture is now issuing its own cautionary message, following weekend reports from "several Delawareans who received unsolicited packages of seeds in shipments from China."

On Monday, the agriculture department said it had learned there were "more than just a few random shipments" and more Delawareans had received the odd packages than initially thought.

Some people, the department said, received just an envelope with the seeds. Others, however, received inexpensive jewelry with the packets.

Though the department of agriculture does not yet know exactly what the seeds are, it said officials believe the shipments are "part of a brushing scam where shippers send out low-cost items at their own expense in order to rank higher on e-commerce sites."

"Brushing helps the seller create a more legitimate appearance to their profiles," the department said.

It also warned not to plant the seeds, echoing other agriculture departments in states across the country. Residents in Virginia, Utah, South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio and Washington State have all reported receiving packages.

Anyone who has received a package is asked to report the shipment to the Smuggling Interdiction and Trade Compliance Program (SITC) by calling the Smuggling Hotline at 1-800-877-3835. Recipients are asked to leave everything inside the package to help investigators trace the origin.

If the seeds were planted, SITC will give advice on how the plants should be handled, the agriculture department said.

After several days, are there no people able to recognize seeds in these governmental institutions?
