NEW DELHI: The government has banned 59 Chinese applications including top social media platforms such as TikTok, Helo and WeChat in order to counter the privacy security posed by these applications.

The move came amid tension with China following the June 15 clashes at Ladakh in which 20 Indian soldiers died in action and more than 70 were injured.

ShareIT, UC browser and shopping app Clubfactory are among the other prominent apps which have been banned. The government has argued that the applications are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.

The government has banned these invoking its power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009, it said in a statement.

A top official said that the government has considered all the aspects before taking the decision. “These apps have been there for a long time, and there are some privacy and security issues with them including risks of data going out of the country,” said the person who did not wish to be identified.

The statement from the ministry of electronics and IT (MEITY) said that it has received many complaints from various sources including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India.

“The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures,” it said

“There have been raging concerns on aspects relating to data security and safeguarding the privacy of 130 crore Indians. It has been noted recently that such concerns also pose a threat to sovereignty and security of our country,” the statement added.

Experts suggested that the ban on apps is a major blow to China's Digital Silk Route ambitions, eroding millions of dollars from valuation of its companies. This could also lead to more countries following India's path in acting against these Apps.

"The Modi government shows its tremendous resolve and dexterity of engaging China on multiple fronts and hitting China where it hurts the most," said a party source. "This is India's first salvo to China after the border clashes, showing that India has a diverse range of retaliatory options," he added.

There are non-Chinese apps with issues about privacy security, why not a ban on those too?

Yes, the ban is not about Chinese apps with privacy security.

It's about tension with China, not about India caring about privacy.

Do you mean that not-Chinese apps are fine when it comes to privacy?

All countries should ban certain apps, like TikTok the ammount of data they steal is insane.

TikTok actually uploads any image or vidoes taken with the app to Chinese servers even if you dont post it online via app.

Most people would be shocked the amount of data collection from most of these type of applications. I always use modded apps where possible that remove permissions and tracking / analytics.

I have also personally analysed WeChat for work. If anybody has it on their phone i would remove it asap.. Unfortunately if in china WeChat basically runs everything, because they are so big they can get away with all the information they steal. China uses it to pay for stuff at shops, chat with people, send data to friends and fam its got a whole lot of uses and because its so widely used in China they can do what they want data collection wise. I actually refer to it as data stealing as that is what they are doing.

Interesting info @UpGrade.

Similar info about apps used in 'Western countries'? 😉

Yeah its not just Chinese apps that are bad, most apps noways from all countries collect more info than they tell you! Its just that Chinese apps are notoriously bad for it and when analysed they usually prove to be ex-filtrating a lot of data
