Karlston
Facebook’s redesigned desktop site with dark mode is now available everywhere Toggle on the new Facebook now if you haven’t already Image: Facebook Facebook’s redesigned desktop site is now available globally, the company announced on Friday. Prior to this change, the new version of Facebook was available only if you opted into it starting in March and only in some markets, although the company said at the time that a majority of people would get access that month. In a blog post published today, Facebook says the new site will “now be the web experience for Facebook globally,” adding that “it’s faster, easier to use and gives your eyes a break with dark mode.” Dark mode is indeed the standout of the new version, but the update also delivers another pretty dramatic overhaul. The home layout features a new skinnier News Feed, ample empty space on the left and right rails, and larger icons and a menu bar that lets you easily jump to various parts of the app. For those who want to turn on the new design and enable dark mode immediately, here’s how: Click on the down arrow at the end of the upper menu bar to pull up old Facebook’s settings menu. Click “Switch to new Facebook.” Click the same down arrow and toggle dark mode from off to on. The goal when Facebook first unveiled the desktop redesign at its F8 developer conference in 2019 was to refocus the core web experience around the areas most people still enjoy using: events, groups, and messaging. It wasn’t quite the end of the News Feed per se, but more Facebook leadership admitted that it’s now an antiquated concept to have an algorithmic feed filled mostly with junk from pages and public posts. People are retreating more and more into private groups and messaging, and Facebook’s only core utility right now is that it’s still the best way to organize a large event with friends or reach out to someone you know whose contact info you don’t have. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said as much when, a few months prior to the redesign reveal, he announced a shift for his entire company toward privacy-focused products and features. And unless you’re in Facebook’s older demographic or you’re particularly into the site’s unique brand of hyper-partisan political content, most people have moved on to spending more of their time on Instagram, TikTok, Twitch, YouTube, and other platforms. The new Facebook reflects the company’s priorities, with a focus on videos for the News Feed (because video ads still earn the company a lot of money) and easy access to events and groups alongside a redesigned Messenger panel. It can be a jarring visual change, but it is a much more pleasant Facebook to use once you know your way around the new interface. Whoopenstein
Well, I think it blows chips. Glitches with posting an album of pics. Didn't see any option to create album. When you upload a series of pics together, not all of them show up at first. Tried to upload a pic again and it shows up multiple times. No way to remove single pic from group. You'd have to delete entire post and do it again. Not an option after multiple comments. Maybe I'm missing something - but shouldn't updates make things easier? Matrix
Facebook's new look begins rolling out for all desktop users Whether you like it or not What just happened? Facebook has changed multiple times over the years, but lately, the website has been experimenting with one of its biggest overhauls to date. After months of adjustments, testing, and feedback from users, the overhaul is finally rolling out for everyone, with the goal of streamlining the Facebook experience. Indeed, Facebook's interface has been simplified so heavily that it's started to resemble competitor Twitter (as well as Facebook's own mobile app) in many ways. The icon design is similar, there are plenty of Twitter-like, bubble-shaped UI elements, and the top navigation bar bears some resemblance to Twitter's as well. At any rate, while some people undoubtedly relished Facebook's old look, the hope among Facebook's leadership team is that the new UI will make it easier to browse the site and access its various features. The updated top navigation bar emphasizes this focus. The new navigation bar has simple, dedicated buttons for your main feed, as well as Facebook's Gaming, Marketplace, Groups, and Watch pages. According to Facebook, the new site will also speed up loading times between pages, and fresh posts on your home feed should appear faster than before. The difference will likely not be noticeable for everyone, but for those on particularly slow connections or machines, it could be a godsend. Other miscellaneous changes arriving with this overhaul include larger fonts, a more responsive layout that scales and adapts to different screen sizes better (though we've seen some of our readers complain about wasted space on larger screens), and, of course, the new "Dark Mode" option. If you haven't gained access to Facebook's redesign yet, note that the roll-out is taking place over several days, so you might have to wait a bit before it arrives for you. When it does, it'll become the new default interface. You can reportedly opt-out and revert to the classic look through the drop-down menu, but we're not sure how long that option will be available. SacredCultivator
If there's a Userscript that can widen it similar to This one then great... as I don't like the "mobile" interface at all.
