dufus
SYDNEY, April 16 (Xinhua) -- An Australian biotech company is studying ways to turn its antiviral compound used in contraception lubricants into a preventative treatment for COVID-19, after the substance tested positively against the coronavirus, according to local media. Starpharma's antiviral compound was tested on the live virus and found to have "significant activity" against it, the Australian Financial Review reported late Thursday. The group's chief executive Jackie Fairley said the compound, which is also effective against diseases such as HIV, herpes, hepatitis B and the Zika virus, had a "potent antiviral effect" against the virus, the newspaper reported. It was still early days and the company was just beginning to speak to regulators and investigate the type of product it could produce that could be effective against the coronavirus, the paper quoted Fairley as saying. "There are a number of potential product embodiments, including things like nasal sprays and eye drops ... which we think in the first instance we'd prioritize as preventative products," Fairley said. "But they're all undergoing evaluation and will be subject to discussions with regulatory authorities." In its studies, Starpharma's antiviral compound was able to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 virus by blocking the interaction between proteins on the surface of the virus and human cell receptors -- the surface proteins usually attach to the human cells, causing the infection -- according to the paper. Starpharma has filed a patent for the use of its antiviral compound against COVID-19. link link
