Matrix
What just happened? Despite Microsoft’s efforts, its Edge product was few people's first choice of browser, but the new Chromium-based version is proving much more appealing. According to recent data, Edge has now overtaken Firefox to become the second most popular desktop browser in the world. NetMarketShare’s March update shows that while Chrome remains the number one browser by a mile with its 68.5 percent share of the market, Edge has moved to second place with 7.59 percent. It’s bad news for Firefox, which has fallen from the number two spot after declining to 7.2 percent. Sitting below Mozilla’s browser is Internet Explorer with 5.87 percent, followed by Safari on 3.62 percent. With Firefox and Internet Explorer losing users, it’s likely that some have defected to Edge or Chrome, the latter of which also saw its share increase last month, by 1.23 percent. While Edge's lead over Firefox is minimal, and it did only see a 0.21 percent gain in March, the browser is moving in the right direction, which isn’t too surprising. Microsoft's decision to rebuild Edge with the same Chromium platform used by Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi, and more brought benefits such as compatibility with Chrome extensions, along with improved performance and customization. For those still not convinced by Edge, Microsoft is adding a slew of new features that could change their minds, including password monitoring and tracking protection, an immersive reader, and vertical tabs & Edge collections. March also saw Google warn people about the ‘security risks’ that come with using Edge and suggested switching browsers, but the warning soon disappeared. Microsoft has confirmed that Covid-19 disruption to staff means major new updates to Edge will be put on hold, and it will focus on fixing bugs in the current version. As Google has done with Chrome, Microsoft has canceled version 82 of the Edge browser. Source

They dont have a choice because they use Google's Browser engine and Chromium only has security updates im still using Chromium 81 Dev and i had 3 updates the release and 2 security updates. Firefox is still releasing new versions lol.
BimBamSmash
What do you guys think is the reason for FireFox's downward trajectory in userbase lately? The extension system overhaul used to be quoted as one, though I was never convinced by it.
Ryrynz
Took longer than I expected. Watch that Chrome share start to dip. 29 minutes ago, BimBamSmash said: What do you guys think is the reason for FireFox's downward trajectory in userbase lately? It's not that it isn't a good browser.. it's just it's fading into irrelevance.
Nastrahl
… And still not resolving I/O bug from almost ten years ago making its Bink engine to still write on the disk even if you don't do anything.
cosy
I downloaded or updated to the recent Firefox release, I must say, it is working very well or better than before. I wish the competition goes on further, so we, the users benefit from this development.

The extension system overhaul used to be quoted as one, though I was never convinced by it. Exactly even I was about to write this. Any way, coming the answer, the thing is that Firefox is still relatively heavier on the system than Chorimium and Edge is still by the lightest (on the processor and memory side) of all the three options. Other than that, Edge has truly 'an edge' because it is built for Windows and by Microsoft and that shows with the smooth execution and feeling associated with the usage of the browser. Lastly, putting all the basic technical analysis aside, most people are lazy and naive when it comes to technology let alone delve into nitty gritties of what browser they should use although this is changing with the increased awareness about privacy. The huge boost to the installation of Windows 10 by consumers, with an increase in computer sales, as well as enterprise adoption means that the corporations are now relying more on Edge than even Chrome because the engine is same, it's not an added software, and the privacy and development aspect is still similar to that of Firefox. In all, I feel Firefox is losing out because now people have add-ons and vpns, to protect privacy and other techniques to ensure that it remains the case. So unless Firefox does not continue innovating and giving reasons for Firefox to be essential in a case or two, the market would face a similar trajectory unless Google fucks up the privacy or development aspect of the browser - pardon my french. 😛 @cosy I hope this helps and you might be able to add more to this. @Ryrynz @Nastrahl

In some cases is much better and even faster than Chrome or Edge (Chrominum), but I really don't like the old version of the extension in comparison with Chrome Web Store (also Edge Web Store). I mean, some extensions are outdated, I don't know why :S

It's decline over years is because of (1) Mozilla's obsession with wanting Firefox to be like Chrome and (2) their slow removal of the one thing that makes made it different, customisability. Now only CSS and Javascript hacks that an average user would struggle with, are able to do what a simple extension or two once would.
