steven36
Microsoft Defender ATP for Linux is now available in a public preview that allows administrators and security professionals to test the product in six different Linux distributions. During the Ignite 2019 conference, Microsoft gave a sneak peek of their Microsoft Defender ATP enterprise security program running in Ubuntu. Microsoft Defender ATP for Linux In conjunction with next week's RSA conference, Microsoft has announced that Microsoft Defender ATP for Linux has now entered public preview and is available for six different Linux distributions. "We are announcing the public preview of preventative protection capabilities from Microsoft Defender ATP on the following supported Linux server distributed versions: RHEL 7+, CentOS Linux 7+, Ubuntu 16 LTS, or higher LTS, SLES 12+, Debian 9+, and Oracle EL 7," Microsoft stated in a blog post. Using the Microsoft Defender ATP endpoint client, Linux administrators will gain access to a command-line antivirus product that will feed any detected threats into the Microsoft Defender Security Center. From there, system administrators can manage any detected threats found on Linux endpoints. Microsoft Defender Security Center Source
steven36
By the way this is not really to protect Linux users it's more for servers to protect Windows users Quote A windows defender for linux may be useful for securing windows machines that need communication with linux machines. So - it's not that linux itself really needs anti-virus services, it's that other machines on the network do, and linux is often in between them. Everyday people on Windows use the web that use servers that are Linux . It for endpoinds that dislikes Symantec , McAfee and others many already have security in place and this is just another option this is aimed at big companies/enterprises not small ones as these would not be able to afford it (their pricing is to expensive ). Its not really anything new to Linux but Microsoft Defender ATP for Linux is new and since they already in deep with Office 365 and Azure they may will use it on Linux instead. I wont use nothing but a open source antivirus on my daily driver non root to scan executables . Closed source ones like NOD32 requires admin privileges that is a big no no on Linux to run apps as root it introduces many vulnerabilities. So on Linux antivirus is a two edge sword. It people who buy Azure it not for consumers it for big enterprises . https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/microsoft-defender-atp/configure-endpoints-non-windows If you want use Windows defender as a home user you need Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. We have a free open source antivirus on Linux anyway for home users Clam TK.
