Matrix
In brief: Just a day after Microsoft's dual-screen Surface Duo smartphone was spotted in the wild, the company has revealed additional details about its upcoming "Windows 10X" operating system, designed for dual-screen devices. We now know that the OS will be capable of updating itself in just under a minute and a half, or 90 seconds, if you prefer. Windows Updates aren't usually tremendously slow to download, but they certainly take longer than a couple of minutes (at least, in my experience). Indeed, there are times where I'll have to leave my machine running for close to 30 minutes to snag the latest updates, and sometimes, the process can even take longer (though that's rarer these days). We're not sure precisely what built-in technology allows Windows 10X to offer faster updates to users, but apparently, Microsoft uses some sort of "state separation" system to isolate drivers and apps from the Windows 10X OS itself. Somehow, The Verge reports, this system lets a Windows 10X machine "simply switch" to the latest version upon a reboot. We'll be reaching out to Microsoft for further details regarding Windows 10X's update capabilities, and this article will be updated with their reply (if we receive one). Until then, a bit of context: Windows 10X was first revealed back in October of 2019, and it's designed to work best on dual-screen or hybrid PCs, such as Microsoft's Surface Neo. The OS' primary goal is versatility -- Microsoft wants it to seamlessly adapt to multiple form factors. Prop a 10X device up like a normal laptop, and the OS will display a digital keyboard for you to use on the bottom screen. Fold it into tablet form, and you'll get an iPad-like touch interface. Alternatively, open it like a book while you cook -- one screen can display a recipe, and the other could show an instructional video. We look forward to learning more about Windows 10X, and the devices that will support it, over the coming months. Source
steven36
You'll have to buy new Microsoft Hardware that will be locked down too Windows 10 x were you can only use Windows 32 apps in containers . so the OS is like Windows 10 s but it has has support for Windows 32 apps, the operating system, drivers, and apps are all separate so Microsoft can simply switch to the latest OS update once a device is rebooted. , so you still have too reboot and if you have slow internet its going take longer than 90 secs unless they 100 updates a day They graduated to 1991-era upgrade performance. On Linux most updates dont require rebooting at all . I just check updates once a day and update and reboot when ever i fell like it . Only time i have to reboot is when the Linux kernel updates thats not very often because i use the one Ubuntu patches and if i wanted to sign into Ubuntu i could do live Linux kernel patching and never have to reboot . Servers and stuff dont reboot linux for months at a time so they invented live patching. On Windows you have to reboot for most any update . If it is good as they claim it going to be why they not trying to sell the software to consumers for existing PCs ? Why they becoming like apple and only way to get there OS is to buy there hardware ? that the very reason i never owned a Mac because i'm not going to pay extra just for the name on it when Linux is free and works on any hardware thats not locked down like smart phone from Big telco . The problem Linux has is only people who read the PC centric news know you can buy a PC with Linux and after all the problems they had on Windows with updates and things they really dont trust it to be any better , so they stay stuck using trustware were they make promises they can't keep about fixing it and it never gets fixed . Updates to fix problems causes more problems . Hopefully Windows 10 x is more stable than Windows 10 because it will have to be to ever sell them to replace there Ipads and older laptops .If they scared to buy a PC with Linux what makes them think many people will buy a PC with a OS that uses containers ? Most people i know really don't trust Microsoft anymore enough to buy there stuff . Enterprise use Windows because they use Office 365 or some niche app that dont run on Linux . But home users are not really tied to win 32 apps Android and IOS proves that . software pirates are addicted to installing stuff they dont have to have, that have free alternatives on Linux and windows . I know all about software pirates and i use to install so much apps testing my uploads i use to have too reformat about once a month. I wonder how you going to patch apps when they in a sandbox container ? You most likely going to need precracked installers or something.. On Ubuntu snaps are locked down and install folders are hard to edit but it dont matter much since most Linux apps are free. You know if people would of adopted UWP that would of ended most software piracy on windows . But were Windows Phone never was a thing and it never caught on so there shifting toward IOT like Ubuntu did after they killed Ubuntu touch Phone . Windows Phones were supported longer than Google supports Android phones . Vendors want you to buy a new phone every year. They wanted to shift toward walled gardens like apple has were even with jail break its a pain to use cracked apps . It would of been funny if it succeed and and all devs would made apps for UWP instead but it was a brain fart tied to mobile that collapsed with windows phone even Facebook is going to stop supporting it. Another app that they got on Android and IOS they want have on windows . they 1000s of apps like that. So what do they plain to have in windows 10 x since they dont have many UWP apps in there store like IOS and android does ? Consumers rather buy a IPAD or a smart phone were have lots of apps if they going to use a walled garden . and nobody but Windows fans is to going to buy a Android phone full of M$ apps .Its just like people making Linux to look like Windows if you want Linux to look like windows you may as well stay on Windows . And Microsoft is doing the same thing with Android trying make it look like windows . Problem is 2 billion are happy with the way Google makes Android look and the cheap price or they would of bought Apple iPhone or even windows phone when they made them.
