Stained Windows! Microsoft to mark illegal copies

PIRATED software users be warned. Microsoft Corp is going to start “nagging” Windows users who do not have a legitimate copy of its operating system (OS).

Starting tomorrow, the software giant will permanently flag personal computers that are not running a genuine copy of Windows.

This move affects the six million Windows users in this country, as well as those in the United States, Britain, New Zealand and Australia.

Industry sources informed In.Tech that the software giant is giving Windows the ability to tell if a user's PC is running a genuine or pirated version of the OS, via an update patch that becomes available from tomorrow.

The patch takes effect if a PC user has opted to automatically update Windows the moment he goes online. It will also take effect should a PC user manually download the latest Windows updates.

If the OS is an unauthorised copy, a pop-up dialogue box will appear on the Windows login screen, informing the user that his copy of the OS is counterfeit and that he should get a genuine copy.

fuck windows updates, they usually cause more harm than good. someone will just make another 30-day trial hack where it never expires like with XP (no serial check at all then). only update i'd get is if it fixes some ongoing error your getting with windows or something which you can get from 3rd party sites btw, other than that fuck em (like i'm ganna trust M$ on security)

only security needed:

1. good antivirus

2. good (and properly configured) firewall

3. atleast 50% of your brain intact (ie. dont open unknown email attachments and dont download from 'fishy sites')

done ;)

oh, my copy of XP is legit (or 'genuine') too. but i'll be damned if i'm ganna waste my money on that DRM bloated POS

i honestly think this will be the falling point for M$, Apple needs to start making MacOS more media and gaming friendly (without DRM) and send Steve Jobs to bitch slap BG with all the money he makes (or takes back from that fuckin thief). i'd honestly hire a bunch of teenage punks to beat the shit out of him, it's cool for them cause they'll be out in 2-3 months (worth $1.5mil each) ;)

there are some workarounds on the net, maybe they can help those who updated Win with the new "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)" out on april 25:

1.C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data

inside you will find a file called Data.dat open that file with notepad and

delete all the stuff in it… now save the file and set it as read only and restart pc.

2.system32 folder: May need to be in safemode to remove these files.

wgalogon.dll

spmgs.dll

wgatray.exe

where setup are:

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\6c4788c9549d437e76e1773a7639582a

delete this file and problem solved .

---------------------------

workaround for nag screen -Go to Start>Control Panel>User Accounts>Change The Way Users Log on or Off>Untick Use Welcome Screen.

Nags removed.

---------------------------

Then just dont install "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)" from windows update.

This: http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ can be an alternative.

As for me i like more to get rid of the update service.

Here's the ultimate solution to all your problems:

Use the windoze server (enterprise) family of products and you will be immune to most checks!

then

Ring up microsoft via the phone to activate windows! Go to a nearby payphone and phone up the number they give. Then get your confirmation code and insert it into the PC.

Simple and easy to do.

M$ won't know because the info it sends is "simply a hash based on computer hardware" and contains no personal info whatsoever, if it did then anyone legal or not could sue their ass for not informing on the intrusion of privacy!

Genuine Advantage Validation doesn't check Server products so they are safe for now!

A friend of mine believes cracking vista beta is another way out, but I just found that cracking the betas will be like a ticking timebomb and so will using a cracked XP too.

Only way out is to use a proper OS like the server family to avoid these intrusive checks.

well, it sounds kinda "a friend of mine told me that", but I don't have reasons to doubt it.

Just... f*cking over their wga is soo funny B)

Better to use Autopatcher

It Looks very good c3p0, too bad i cannot use it:

Windows Versions

Q: Which versions of Windows are supported?

A: The main AutoPatcher releases are aimed at English Windows with the latest service pack. However, it will load on any Windows version, showing only the included items (modules) which match the running environment. There are also special releases for Greek, Dutch, Norwegian and Portuguese (from Portugal and from Brazil) Windows.

Server 2003 is unaffected by WGA validation and notification!

I can get past it w/o my windows even being activated and using a blacklisted key.

I've only been "unverified" once doing phone activation - just pick a nice poor country and freephone em using the new skype beta with tor or another proxy and they can't trace you either way!

Especially if you proxify the signup of the skype account and use fake details :P

1st of all you can just choose not to install it, just set auto-updates to download but not automatically install until you say so!

Then all you do is choose custom when you go to do your auto update and not install the "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification"

Just FYI Illegal copies of XP aren't the only one's getting WGAN. My Desktop has a legit version of XP PRO that I purchased direct from Microsoft. Low and behold on May 2nd I got the infamous notice my copy wasn't genuine. It turns out that during the last two plus years I have had to re-activate Windows due to hardware changes. When doing this, Microsoft's tech people gave me a new product key to install each time. It seems that the WGA doesn't know what to think of that. It took over an hour and a half on the phone with Microsoft to get the problem fixed.

This is the same routine I went through last summer when they started the WGA on their update site except then it took 4 hours and someone from research doing a remote to fix it that time. Don't just assume that your copy is counterfiet just because WGAN says so!! B) :P

To remove WGA andWGAN search the registry and remove any mention of WGA or WGAN. then boot to safe mode and seach WGAN and remove all files that appear in search. If you can't remove it rename it by changing .dll to .ddd. reboot and viola it's all gone. ;)

OPPS! forgot to mention you must set Auto Update to "notify" then when updates arrive select custom, uncheck WGAN and when after you close the current update check the box to never receive WGAN again and your home free. B)
