It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing. The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with a small amount of C++ for installation and shell-integration related functionality. Karamjit Posted November 26, 2019 Author Share Posted November 26, 2019 In This Release: paint.net 4.2.7 - released on November 25th, 2019 This hotfix addresses a crash at startup that was happening on some systems. Fixed a crash at startup (FileLoadException) due to 1) the stub for System.Runtime.dll not being updated, and 2) the rigid version binding policy that prevented the older version from working in its stead (which would've been fine in this case). Guest Posted November 26, 2019 Share Posted November 26, 2019 Gentle reminder here: 1. Paint.NET now requires Win7 SP1 (with Platform Update installed), Win 8.1 and Win 10 (v1607 and above). 2. In addition, Paint.NET also requires .NET framework to be installed (minimum version 4.7.2 , but the Paint.NET installer also contains web installer of .NET framework 4.8 which will install if it detects no .NET framework or .NET framework below version 4.7.2). 3. .NET 4.8 is included on Win 10 v19xx, manual installation/install via Windows Update is required if running Win 7 SP1 (with Platform Update), Win 8.1 and Win 10 v1607-v1809. 4. .NET 4.7.2 is included on Win 10 v18xx, manual installation/install via Windows Update is required if running Win 7 SP1 (with Platform Update), Win 8.1 and Win 10 v1607-v1709. 5. Windows 10 v1507 LTS will need to upgrade to the next LTS release (v1607 or v1809) in order to use Paint.NET and install the required version of .NET framework (see point 2). 6. Even if you're using any portable version of Paint.NET, .NET framework still need to be installed on your computer (see point 2). p/s: The link given on Paint.NET site leads to the version 4.7.1 (which Paint.NET doesn't support) , but don't worry as the Paint.NET installer also includes web installer of .NET framework 4.8.
