YouTube needs to chill with its annoying Premium spam

Pop-up ads only hurt consumers

 

YouTube has been pissing me off for weeks. I’m starting to feel like I should pay $11.99 a month to subscribe to YouTube Premium just to get rid of the annoying pop-ups Google sends me almost daily. Google has decided to place pop-up ads in its own YouTube app for Premium subscriptions. This feels slightly acceptable at first, but Google has also decided these should spam you to death, sometimes full-screen, with no option to permanently dismiss them so you see them all the damn time.

 

It’s a classic growth hack designed to get more people to use YouTube Music or YouTube Premium because, honestly, who cares about either of those services? I already subscribe to Spotify, which is far superior to YouTube Music, and I’d never pay $11.99 just to have fewer YouTube ads and background playback of videos on my phone. It’s a pointless subscription that Google is trying to lazily ram down my throat instead of improving its offering, competing fairly with others, and, most importantly, focusing on its customer experience.

 

Google’s efforts here have made sure I, and I bet many others, will never touch YouTube Music or YouTube Premium. I absolutely loathe both of these services to the point where I’m left swearing at my phone like an idiot, simply because these stubborn ads keep appearing on top of the YouTube videos I’m trying to watch.

 

I wish Google was alone in its efforts, but it’s an age-old trick that other giant tech companies that also control major platforms have been experimenting with recently. Apple has decided it’s fine for it to use marketing push notifications for its new Apple TV Plus subscription service and even a full-screen ad on the Apple TV hardware itself.

 

 

Microsoft also went through a phase of infesting Windows 10 with annoying ads for OneDrive, its Edge browser, and more. Thankfully, Microsoft has relented and changed its ways, and Apple’s own notifications are a one-time-only affair.

 

Google also does similar tricks to force people into using Chrome, too. There are plenty of notifications in Google search to switch to Chrome if you’re not using Google’s browser, and a lot of Google’s web services barely support rival browsers when they first debut. Microsoft also uses notifications on its webpages to get people to use Edge or Bing, and these often feel persistent rather than occasional one-time messages.

 

All of this behavior is super irritating if you’re a customer of Google, Apple, or Microsoft who enjoys using services from different companies. I use a Windows PC daily, with Google’s web services, and an iPhone 11 Pro for my mobile needs. I want these things to work better together, not to be forced into paying $11.99 a month to make some dumb message disappear when I’m using YouTube.

 

It’s also super anti-competitive. Apple, Google, and Microsoft don’t allow third-party developers to abuse their platforms with these types of pop-ups, so why do these giant tech companies think it’s fine just because they’re in control?

 

I just want to open up the YouTube app and not be counting the seconds until I see another one of these damn pop-ups. Google, do better.

Freetube works fine for me on desktop for YouTube  with no ads or spam i can subscribe to channels and  save favorites without even signing in . They say 3rd party apps for mobile are fine as long as you dont use them to sign in were  they can ban you . If you dont  upload  or make videos  why would you want to sign in?  The comment section on YouTube is toxic .

 

Spam  should not be a pirates problem that dont care about Google's copyright polices they can use apps that are in a  legal gray area and get around it .

Dont see the point in FreeTube other than the dev seeking e-peen, because at some point youre going to want to watch it on another device and theres no avoiding signing in at some point.....just saying...

 

Youre not l33t because you dont sign into google folks....

 

Its like people using MicroG, liek theyre getting something over on Google, no youre not, youre making your device harder to use and your life less productive...

 

I have better things to do, i sign into google, learn how to use the privacy tools they actually give you, and get on with life, like a sane person

 Having to sign into Google  is a extra work for me i have a Google account i only use it when  i need to download something  from Gdrive and the uploaders account ran out of bandwidth    , I dont watch YouTube on other devices  are even have any . i still have a dumb TV  with satellite  i can watch videos legally  and not use the internet even. 

 

Plus i have 3 external  hard-drives full of movies and TV shows that i can watch without the internet  even and Kodi , LeonFilx  , Stremio and  ICE ssb that lets me make my own webapps   to stream   . YouTube is not the only free site with videos  i only use it to watch some documentaries or some  music videos once in a bluemoon . if its something i want to keep i just download the song from some other sites in real quality   . My emails are not even Google and i have and app for them as well . For me to sign in anywhere  not just Google they must have something i want or need  and Google never has nothing i want or need  worth signing into , It's just like GDrive  i just get it on another filehoster  were i dont need to sign in most of the time .

 

People like you  who think you must use Google for everything  and give them your data  is why the the USA .EU and Other Governments is suing them for Antitrust  , unfair competition and privacy issues , they got you trapped in there ecosystem ( you  admitted it even) . They make way more money off ads then any  legit streaming that charge a monthly fee but they dont really have nothing that interest me  enough to visit YouTube everyday  .

 

Some people  who are anti ad rather pay than see ads even and  people who  dont use adblockers  and 3rd party apps to try to get around the ads  . When  workarounds stop working were i see ads  i will just download the video from YouTube like I use to do with Hulu  and if they get DRM like HULU has now  , Netflix and Amazon i will just will  stop using YouTube   I never bought into Google . I was one of the 1st Gmail users  back when it was invite only once they changed there privacy policy in like 2012 and started  making ads based on your emails. emails should  be none of there business . I stop using it years ago, the emails i have work just fine for everything,  so no need for Google . Just like the documentaries and music i get other sites are better quality than YouTube.

 

 

The pita about about services being free and legal is ADs, low bitrates  crippleware and privacy issues . If you pay you can get the best quality and most of the time no ads. If you pirate you can get the best quality and if use adblocker or app you still get a ad free experience .

 

It's not even about being elite  this is privacy  and security your in the wrong  part of the board  with that rant. This is not  a section about being a elitist .  You using Google over everything else don't make you  l33t ether it means you just follow what  the masses do out of convenience. So you chose convenience over privacy  it just makes you another puppet  that can't live without Big Tech.  We live in a sad age that's full of codependent morons who think it's its OK to sell out there data and privacy for some free services. That make up excuses for being codependent ,  a cheap skate or broke and troll because of  problems of there own making . 

 

 

 

It's just like  Satya Nadella is  only reason hes rich is because he sold some stock Microsoft gave him hes no were as rich as the other CEO before him and Sundar Pichai is not even a billionaire yet ether .  I hope they all invested heavy in the stock market and another crash like in 2008 comes along and makes them worthless . Tech CEOs  are the worse kind of people  they think there invincible , they defend there company's  greed ,and hire people  to hide there net loss  it's not  about  if there products are any good or not  it's about selling  people  on a  fantasy so Wall street will buy there stock.  Any company that trades on wall street  the stock is sold by crooks  it's like gambling and were casino owner  cheats the players.

 

They will go to  any means to cover up who they really are when there really crap that learn how to take something that should have  0 value unless your  a cop . They took ads and things and made them not just part of entertainment but every thing you do online unless you pay for a ad free product .  Without Data and ads Google would just be a small company if anything at all.

 

That's what is so funny  about when they receive lots of  negative publicity it's takes toll on them and brings them off of cloud 9.
