I was having problems with a few programs that would not close after a normal exit. I could not end task either from task manager. I had to reboot machine every time. I spent hours trying to figure out what it could be so I looked at my security programs.  The 3 programs that wouldn't close was ,Chrome Browser,Everything File Search, and Foobar 2000 portable. After testing I found that the culprit was Malwarebytes ransomware feature. When you turned it off the programs all closed. When enabling ransomeware it continued. It is said in many forums that you can't run an antimalware and an antivirus program at the same time. Fact is you can. You just can't run 2 antivirus programs at the same time. I been doing it for 20 years with no ill effects on probably 20 different machines. To finally conclude I did a clean install of Win 10 Pro 1909 418. So it's not my system files corrupted. Disabling Kaspersky had no effect on the testing.

@Nastrahl Could you explain what a "virus" is and have you ever seen it yourself, or is it something like "God" that is talked about and believed but nobody has ever seen it anywhere?

I don't know anyone who has ever seen some of them in their lifetime, and I'm already enough old....

I honestly wonder. Is it something you catch without doing anything that escape to your control?

I once "caught" Blaster like you catch a cold by doing nothing, during the installation of Windows XP (before SP1 or 2, I can't remember) because they didn't activate its firewall by default after initializing the network interface. But since it was during the process which you can't do anything, it was vulnerable too and the only preemptive measure was to physically disconnect the ethernet cable beforehand.

If so, even auto updates can be considered as virus.

I believe all these tools are only to make people "feel" they are safer, without the real need.

Then what do you advise?..that we surf the internet only with a browser? Remember that many, many people don't have your knowledge and ability with code, hosts files, TCP connections, processes, etc etc etc. Perhaps you have the expertise to pre-empt problems but many of us don't and so we turn to these "antivirus/anti-malware" programs. Let's say they are 99% useless....well even if that is true, 1% effectiveness is better than nothing...especially if you haven't paid for it!!:w00t::w00t::w00t:

What you need is a firewall. Fortunately there's a good one already in Windows. You don't need any particular knowledge.

It doesn't works like that. You don't catch a malware/virus/adware/whatever by some unfortunate random curse cast on you. That 1% you'll never catch is buried somewhere so deep you'll never pass by, and I'm sure that it's the same for the 99% ones.

Real good discussion but the question remains how to be protected while browsing? Being cautious is always the number one recommendation beside using “good browsing habits!”, that never seems to be enough.

You just need a firewall and a good behavior. Why do you need more ? Good habits is the more accurate however. But you are right, security tools besides a firewall are there only for you to feel safe. It's too bad because you lose perf as well as CPU time. If you need to go to dangerous places, you better be choosing virtualizing software of something like Shadow Defender.

https://www.ghacks.net/2019/11/05/malwarebytes-4-0-for-windows-launches/       " The new version has several issues. Users who run Windows Firewall Control (which Malwarebytes acquired some time ago) will notice that Malwarebytes Self-Protection module will prevent the firewall tool from opening. Other issues include that Controlled Folder Access blocks certain advanced installer options on Windows machines and GUI issues with high DPI and certain screen resolutions. "

Can we use Malwarebytes 4.0 together with ESET IS 12, in the same PC ?

Yes, baba011vanga. I've had no issues on my setup. I used the mb-clean utility and did a fresh install of 4.0.4.49.

I'll avoid upgrading to Malwarebytes 4.0 and will wait for a 4.1.x version as the 3.x offline installers were removed from their web site after 4.0 was released :(

have an old Win7 laptop that runs Malwarebytes 3.8.3 and can't be upgraded to 4.x but I may use a 4.x version in the future on a Win10 LTSC computer

If you really think you need it and must install it again, go to this site and choose what you want.

Is it still like an antivirus companion or is it became a full fledged antivirus now ?

Anti-Virus Replacement

Is Malwarebytes 4.0 Premium an anti-virus replacement?

With Malwarebytes 4.0 we are releasing brand new detection technology as part of our Anti-Malware protection. This detection technology further bridges the gap between Malwarebytes and traditional anti-virus, and allows Malwarebytes to now not only detect more zero-hour malware immediately upon seeing it, but also lets us catch more legacy-style malware. Based on our testing, Malwarebytes 4.0 Premium alone provides excellent protection against today’s threat landscape. We believe in layered defense and built Malwarebytes 4.0 Premium to provide the right mix of proactive and signature-less technologies to combat modern threats and zero-day malware. The combination of our Anti-Malware, Anti-Exploit, Anti-Ransomware, Website Protection, and Remediation technologies provides better coverage against modern and zero-day threats than the traditional antivirus companies that charge more for less effective protection.

Since Malwarebytes 4.0 Premium is an anti-virus replacement, will it register itself in Windows Security Center in order for Windows to recognize it as security software?

With any new install Malwarebytes 4.0’s new default behavior is to register in Windows Defender Security Center (also known as Windows Security Center, Windows Action Center) as a primary line of defense. Due to Microsoft’s implementation of Windows Defender Security Center, this means that Windows Defender will disable itself as a result (depending on your operating system). However, if you prefer to run Malwarebytes alongside any other traditional antivirus (including Windows Defender, Symantec or McAfee) you can disable the Windows Security Center setting in Security Settings within Malwarebytes 4.0. This will prevent Malwarebytes from registering in Windows Security Center and either your secondary antivirus or Windows Defender will show as registered. Malwarebytes 4.0 will continue to run seamlessly alongside these other solutions in compatibility mode.

You can't bypass a firewall unless somebody has already put a backdoor in your system, plus allowed it for outbound traffic so I would say yes.

In my previous statements I forget to write about HIPS, that control what is actually "launched" in your system. It's one of the ultimate security tool if you want to be sure to keep an eye about everything that can happen, but quite frustrating to use since it will ask you about everything before having it configured for each programs (and can hangs your system if you do a mistake).

I think that it can be a good training experience, going for a full protection suite to "learn" and judge by yourself after some time about its necessity. When you'll get familiar and got the good "behavior"/reflex about what and how to do, especially if you notice that you never catch anything in years, that'll mean you don't really need them (only a firewall and a HIPS if you wan't full control). Then you can just download those "emergency" AV tools to scan and clean already infected system without (that can be done without installing them) from time to time, just in case.

You can do on-demand scan (without real time scan) about what you download with tools like Winja that'll check on virus total and give you results without using your browser for more convenience.

@Nastrahi....." Then you can just download those "emergency" AV tools to scan and clean already infected system..........."

                         That's like shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted. What if the "infected system" is so corrupted that it's unbootable. I'm sorry, but you guys with a high level of competence and knowledge take it for granted that everyone else who surfs the internet is bestowed with the same ability as all of you, and that's not the case.

                         I take care when I'm surfing, I don't visit random sites or click here and there blindly. But how do I know when a "not dangerous" site that i have visited and downloaded from for years becomes a "dangerous" site?

                         I have worked with guys who were IT's and they never ever said "Don't use an antivirus, or anti-malware...you don't need them 'cos they don't work" So the general consensus here is that all those millions and millions of people and companies that pay for and use that protection are wrong and are being conned?:w00t::w00t::w00t:

@funkyy

It's all very nice, but you forget one little thing. Namely, malware manufacturers are always at least one step ahead of all users and protectors. They are a little smarter than the inventors of protective equipment. That's the case and there is "dog buried".(it's our proverb or saying).
It is analogous to everyday life. See how wise your wife is, only her wisdom always comes the next day!
I would love to be as smart today as my wife is tomorrow. But tomorrow it's a bit late to be smart.
The same thing is with virus protection, they are always a little late, no matter how good they are.
Just like firefighters in real life. They come, but always a little late. Then, when the fire has already done its job. They only rinse the logs and glowing charcoals....

@Kalju

                I agree that it's an ongoing war against the malware creators, but we don't have any alternative except to fight them until one day someone creates or discovers by accident a foolproof "protection". We cannot simply give up just because the malware manufacturers are "always one step ahead". We didn't have telephone or television until someone (Scottish!!) invented them. so perhaps tomorrow an unknown genius will come up with a new anti-malware system/method that will change everything in our favour. The internet is still in its infancy and it's evolving faster and faster. In another10 years digital technology will be at an unbelievable level and our immunity level will be higher.

               But for now we have to use the tools at our disposal. I'm not defeatist and I believe some protection is better than no protection. Anyway, I liked  your little example about "see how wise your wife is...." You obviously haven't met my wife!!! lol.:w00t::w00t::w00t:

OK, you can put them on your computer just as much as you want or how much you can buy them or whatever. As a result, nothing will change. The only thing happens - you run out of disk space and your computer slows down. Nothing else not changing.
As far as technological advances are concerned, there is no matter how advanced they are, the so-called "Machine Crushers" always remain, and they are always ahead of every defense.
I'm not forbidding you to install them, install even in tons, if you want. I'm trying to explain to you that they don't will work never, because they just aren't done for it, but at all for other thing.
But now go and begin to install them, then your soul will be satisfied. And if the soul is satisfied, it is good to be and health is much better.
All in all, it's better .... Then is better.

I've been doing these things my whole life, learner much, have been for years teacher and headmaster at school, trying to teach and help people, but they don't want to.

That is sad.

I doubt anyone will run out of disc space from installing an AV solution...and I use that term loosely! Computer being slower??...prolly not gonna notice this either nowadays...Nothing else changing....bingo...give that man a cigar! Waste of time...

@Kalju,

            relax amigo, I know you have a lot of ability and you are giving us your honest opinion. Of course I know that a competent hacker can breach almost all defences, but my point wasn't about hackers or government agencies....I am not talking about Firewall configuration (like someone mentioned above), I'm simply speaking about getting an alert when I am downloading files from a movie site (for example hahaha).

I am generally very careful when downloading, but there is always the possibility that if you are downloading a movie (for example hahaha) in 20 RAR files, that one of them may contain something malicious...so if my antivirus gives me a warning I can decide to continue the download or not. I know the antivirus will not keep out a determined hacker, but at least it gives me a chance of avoiding an unwanted visitor in my computer.

          And I can promise you that I do learn...but I like to question things....you probably noticed already!!:w00t::w00t::w00t: All the best amigo!!

@Nastrahl

Appreciate this info. The case with the firewall and HIPS use, is for someone not professional like myself it is impossible to know what to block, eventually will impact some program if I started trial and error. That is the reason for me to look into having a program that does the job for me.

I think this will be too late in some situations for unprofessionals like me.

This is absolutely right, but I do not think the reason is those guys are smarter, the reason maybe protection companies are unable (or unwilling) to develop a sort of immunity.

Malwarebytes use for some time, and super recommend better than much free and paid antivirus, super low price tool, and meets the needs, use the modified version 3.5.1 premium crack, for some time, this last version 4.0 found a lot of perfumery.

It will probably be hard to activate
