LG and Qualcomm join forces for car infotainment platform

LG Electronics announced today that it will collaborate with Qualcomm Technologies on the development of its infotainment 'WebOS Auto' platform for use in commercial vehicles. The system will allow for connected cars to provide a vast range of entertainment and safety features.

 

 

 

The deal was agreed at a meeting between the two companies at an event in downtown Seoul at LG Electronics Research and Development campus on October 29th. In the deal, Qualcomm will provide its latest 5G Snapdragon networking solutions and services, with LG incorporating the upgraded WebOS 2.0 platform allowing for a more streamlined experience for drivers and passengers to enjoy.

 

In a statement LG Electronics president and CTO Dr. I.P Park said;

"We very much value this collaboration with Qualcomm it expands the ecosystem of the WebOS platform with the latest solutions from Qualcomm such as 5G networks and multimedia, customers will be able to experience the same entertainment at home in connected cars."

 

LG acquired the Linux WebOS platform from HP back in February 2013 and has been using it ever since for a number of connected smart devices such as LG televisions, refrigerators, and smart projectors.

 

At the event, LG also unveiled the WebOS open source edition 2.0 on its developer site. The two companies are likely to showcase the new system at CES 2020 which takes place in January 2020.
