After testing DTS immersive sound for a couple of months, Microsoft has made the app available on the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 v1903 users. DTS has updated their app to support the latest Windows 10 May 2019 Update as well.

The app is named ‘DTS Sound Unbound‘ and brings support for both DTS:X and DTS Headphone:X to your PC. Microsoft hasn’t shared the timeline for availability on Xbox One devices but it should be available soon. According to the Microsoft listing, the app will be available on Windows 10 build 18362.xxx or newer.

DTS:X technology enables playback of your favorite DTS-encoded content creating lifelike, multi-dimensional audio for the PC. Elevate your movie watching experience with improved immersion and realism that makes horror movies scarier, comedies funnier, and brings you into the center of the action.

DTS Headphone:X technology also is designed to give you a gaming competitive edge by creating an accurate, believable, and immersive soundscape using any pair of headphones, enabling you to truly lose yourself in your favorite video games and movies. To deliver unmatched end-to-end audio quality, DTS Headphone:X includes a database of more than 450 tuned headphones – delivering an advanced audio solution that renders sounds above, around, and close to the user, stepping up game play to new levels.

DTS Headphone:X is also optimized for Microsoft Spatial sound and supports the following games:

  • Gears 5
  • Borderlands 3
  • Call of Duty Modern Warfare
  • Forza Horizon 4
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins
  • For Honor
  • Final Fantasy XV
  • Resident Evil 2
  • Metro Exodus
  • The Division 2

If you’re someone who’s interested in DTS then you can get the app from the Microsoft Store. The app comes with a limited trial and requires a one-time payment to unlock all the features.

I don't like Microsoft Store apps. Why are they forcing this on us?

This makes the app Windows 10 exclusive.

What about Windows 8.1?

Unfortunately, Microsoft gets to decide which OS's apps are released for. Windows 10 only apps are to "encourage" older Windows OS users to move to it.

Actually, Microsoft has stop accepting new app submissions with Windows Phone 8.x or earlier or Windows 8/8.1 packages (XAP or APPX) on October 31 last year. You can read more here:

However, updates to the existing Windows 8.1 apps are still available, but it will be the developer's prerogative to decide.
