Google planning big changes to the way Chrome tabs work, but you might not notice

The change is either going to annoy you in a big way, or you won't notice.

Google is planning to carry out a major decluttering of the tab options that users are presented with when they right-click on a tab in the Chrome browser. And you're either going to hate these changes, or not notice them at all.

Google has killed off four tab options in the latest Canary preview nightly build aimed at developers. Gone are the following options:

  • New tab
  • Close other tabs
  • Reopen closed window
  • Bookmark all tabs

In my experience the number of people who use these features is pretty low, with most people surprised that these options exist. That said, the last time Google floated the idea of culling these options, user outrage was high, and the search giant gave in to pressure.

Not all features and changes in Canary builds make it to the final release, so Google may back down again. If you use these options, then my suggestion is that you start learning and using the keyboard shortcuts for the options you need.

It saddens me that developers remove features simply because they're not used by many.

Remove enough of these lesser used features, and chances are that many are affected.

What's the harm in leaving them? The obsession with minimalism strikes again...

I use Close other tabs and Reopen closed tabs all the time.  Not the others though.

What the actual f***... I always use reopen closed tabs. I hope an extension will add that back if they push thru removing although nobody asked them to !

When they start removing features from browsers , extensions  are most of the time only a temporary  fix  tell they phase it out of the UI completely . We had a bunch of Firefox users who rode that train for awhile tell they removed those features from the UI . I still have them in Waterfox tell this day . So if it ever goes final it's all down hill from there , Firefox still have this close other tabs ,  reopen other tabs and close tabs to right and have and addon close tabs to the left  i been using these for years so just another reason not to use google  chrome . I never used it to begin with and still never been able to get use to using chromium forks as my default or the new Firefox for that matter . I have certain things  i do with them sometimes just because i like to test web browsers  and have  Chromium , Brave , Firefox  , Otter browsers installed but i use Waterfox  most of the time. I use the others mostly for streaming websites. But for posting and downloading I use Waterfox mostly. :P
