Over 50% of Google searches result in no clicks, data shows

Google is hungry for your clicks. But it turns out that more than half of all Google Search queries now result in no clicks.

As of June 2019, 50.3 percent of Google searches received zero clicks. By contrast, searches with organic clicks to non-Google websites now make up only 45 percent of all traffic.

That is according to data from marketing analytics firm Jumpshot based on 40 million browser-based searches on desktop and mobile in the US. The data was crunched by Rand Fishkin, founder of audience intelligence search engine SparkToro.

Even worse, it seems this trend towards zero-click searches has seen steady growth since 2016. In the meantime, organic reach for third-party websites has continued to shrink.

To be fair, it’s not all that surprising that a large number of searches result in no clicks – especially when we factor in that Google has been shifting its attention to summing up results in snippets at the top of Search. While those might be easier to scan for users, they do eat into third-party websites’ traffic.

We’ve reached out to Google for comment, but have yet to hear back. We’ll update this post accordingly, if we do.

However, as Fishkin points out, a US congressional panel recently asked Google if it was true that less than 50 percent of searches lead to non-Google websites. It was a simple Yes-No question, but the Big G eschewed giving a direct response. Instead, it took a dig at the authenticity of the data cited – without denying it.

“The author of the report cited in our letter did not make his specific methodology clear, but it’s inaccurate to portray featured snippets as simply answering a question and never resulting in a click,” the company wrote in a statement. “Many sites strive to have their content highlighted as a snippet, which can drive meaningful traffic.”

Interestingly, Fishkin further notes that Google’s search dominance has reached a 94-percent market share (the data is based solely on browser-based searches).

For the record, this isn’t an entirely new development. Back in June, Search Engine Land cited earlier research from Fishkin that suggested the number of zero-click searches in the first quarter of 2019 had reached nearly 49 percent of all queries.

Still though, the outlet noted that the Fishkin’s methodology wasn’t exactly bulletproof.

The figures are based on over one billion web browser searches on ten million domestic desktop and Android devices in the US,” Search Engine Land wrote. “It does not include searches conducted on iOS devices, the Google Search app, voice-only devices or searches that ended in a click to a mobile app.”

The finding reignites discussions on Google’s anti-competitive conduct, which many have criticized in the past.

Indeed, reports from yesterday suggest that 23 European job search firms are working on filing an antitrust complaint against Google with the European Union. The companies allege the Big G placed its own job search results above those of competitors.

What makes matters even more pressing is that it’s hardly the first time the search engine giant has drawn criticism for its anti-competitive practices.

In the past, the company was fined €1.49 ($1.67) billion for killing ad competition, €2.4 ($2.69) billion for unfairly boosting its own shopping service, and €4.34 ($4.87) billion for illegally restricting the use of Android.

It's no surprise that they are doing this Steven36.  You and I and other people have known for a long time that they have been manipulating research result.  A recent whistleblower from the company just came out pubilicly.  It is no coincidence that they are doing this.  And he has documents to prove it too.  This shed so much and I have learn a lot about their practices.

I would say that a lot of information is provided by Google without needing to actually open any links. Want to calculate something. Only Google it. Want to check the meaning of the word, just Google it. No need to actually open any links in it.

Yes what they do is wrong too  because they steal that info stuff from other sites because the link will be down below it and a lot of  the stuff will be outdated if you click the link the info came from and look.

Google has a policy against scraping their results, but their whole business model is predicated off scraping other sites and making money off the content - in many cases never sending traffic (or significantly reduced traffic) to the publisher of the content.

Some stuff they want give you relevant answers for so people ether use something else or just give up.  Stuff like that is why they under anti trust investigations in the USA ,EU ,AU and Russia. they got lot of  smaller internet companies  that use to be in good with them mad at them for shititng on them  and want to see Google get broke up. Google News not half as good it use to be they use give you lots  of news sites to the same story now they dont  have that no more and they hiding the news so others are better , Looks like a guy from windows 8 came to re-design the google news. i  don't use it very much .YouTube videos are ok but i use a open source site that have there own api for it instead of  YouTube API  unless it's a video with drm. they got good images still i have  each part of Google in my search engines so i don't have to visit there main search unless i want .

Why does Google not return relevant search results anymore?

Google search is not working anymore. Google abandoned Google search altogether. It’s defunct. Google started with search engine innovation and now, like many other businesses in capitalism, abandoned the very essence of its business for short gain reasons. Google, Microsoft, Apple, they all failed customers miserably.

You want a proof?

How about searching for the following (simple) set of words:

switch "from OneDrive to Dropbox" from windows phone how?

As you can see, I am emphasizing that I want to search explicitly for the term “from OneDrive to DropBox”. For if I wanted to switch from DropBox to OneDrive, then I would simply say so.

But no, the stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid Google search intentionally converts my search criteria into the following:

switch "from Dropbox to OneDrive" from windows phone how?

and presents results that I had never asked for.

So what is the root cause of such stupidity of unprecedented proportions?

Nobody knows. I assume it must be some monetary incentive from Microsoft to Google so that Google hides all results that could lead customers away from (stupid) OneDrive to (much better) DropBox.

As simple as that.

For a little bit of short term gains, the stupid Google will eventually lose majority of its customers. The only reason this did not happen yet is that other businesses (read Microsoft, Apple, etc) are comparably as stupid as Google. It seems that stupidity is an universal category (as Mark Twain has always claimed).

But here   is my own research  i put in instead

How to migrate from OneDrive to Dropbox

and look at the sinpet  they gave me

So hes right  google search is broke if  that's the kind of results your getting by not clicking on links your getting  info you didn't even ask for and people who use it are just stupid as google AI .
