Apple Unveils iOS 13 for iPhone with Dark Mode, Performance Improvements

Apple announced today during the WWDC 2019 live event the iOS 13 operating system for iPhone and iPod devices, a massive release that finally introduces a long-anticipated Dark Mode, as well as numerous other new features, enhancements, and updates apps.

Dark Mode, which was introduced to the Mac with last year's macOS Mojave 10.14 operating system, has finally arrived on the iPhone and iPod with iOS 13, a major release that also introduces new ways to browse the Web, enhanced photo editing and organizing features, the ability to sign in to apps and websites with your Apple ID, as well as a brand-new way to navigate the world with an all-new map.

iOS 13 promises great performance improvements for older and new devices leading to twice as fast launching of apps, up to 30 percent faster FaceID unlocks, and up to 60 percent smaller updates. It also promises to better protect your privacy with a plethora of new privacy features, totally revamps the Reminders app, brings new Siri capabilities, improves Location Services, and adds support for third-party apps to CarPlay.

"iOS 13 brings new capabilities to the apps you use every day, with rich updates to Photos and Maps, and privacy-protecting features like Sign In with Apple, all while delivering faster performance," said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. "We’re excited for customers to experience what’s coming to iPhone this fall and can’t wait for them to see how great everything looks in Dark Mode."Supported devices and availabilityIn addition to the features mentioned above, iOS 13 will bring the ability to make adjustments to Portrait Lighting right in the Camera app and a new High-Key Mono effect, a powerful new experience for people with disabilities thanks the much-improved Voice Control feature, an enhanced iOS keyboard with one-hand typing and swiping support, as well as improved Health and Notes apps.

iOS 13 will be supported on iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPod touch (7th generation). The beta version is out today for early adopters, and it will be available for public testing in July. The final release of iOS 13 is expected this fall, most probably in September.

Apple is building a major defense against spam calls into iOS 13

Calls from unknown numbers will be automatically sent to voicemail

Apple is taking a new step to combat spam calls in iOS 13. Today, you can already install third-party spam call screeners on your iPhone, but if that’s not good enough (or something you don’t want to do), iOS 13 will add a new solution this fall: it will be able to automatically silence any calls coming in from an unknown number. Even better, it’ll automatically send them to voicemail.

The new “silence unknown callers” option can be toggled on or off based on your preference, but I’m thinking most people will enable it right after updating and leave it that way. The feature is explained on this page of what’s new in iOS 13.

So many of the spam calls we’re bombarded with on a daily basis are spoofed to look like a local number. But Apple says that iOS 13 will “use Siri intelligence to allow calls to ring your phone from numbers in Contacts, Mail, and Messages.” Any number that can’t be found in one of those places will be routed to voicemail.

You won’t have to worry about them making noise or buzzing your phone when they come in. From the sounds of it, the call won’t even pop up on your screen, so you can completely avoid interruptions if you’re using your iPhone when a spammer tries to ring you. It makes sense that Apple will still record a voicemail for cases where it really is an emergency.

This should make for an extremely helpful middle ground between leaving your phone totally open to any and all nuisance calls and the extreme option of activating Do Not Disturb and allowing only your contacts to get through when they call. When this new option is enabled, iOS will also be factoring in mail and messages, so you won’t miss hearing from people you haven’t had a chance to create a contact for just yet. If you often get business calls from strangers, “silence unknown callers” isn’t going to be the ideal solution for you. But hopefully there will be others soon.

iOS 13: Every new feature you need to know about now

All the new software Apple will soon deliver to your iPhone with iOS 13.

apple-ios-13-wwdc-2019

Apple's changes in iOS 13 for iPhone are coming soon.

James Martin/CNET

Soon iOS 13, Apple's newest software for iPhones, will bring a slew of features big and small to your phone. Dark mode, new photos tools and a swipe-able keyboard are some of the bigger ones, with new Maps tools, security features and the ability to customize Memoji avatars folded in for good measure. While Apple highlighted certain features, keep in mind that the company often reserves some surprises for the iPhone reveal each September. There may be more features yet to come.

One big change to iOS 13 is that it doesn't directly fuel the iPad. Apple split off a new OS just for tablets called iPad OS. The new iPad OS is based on iOS for iPhone, so you'll find similarities with the phone's core features there.

The iOS 13 unveiling at Apple's annual WWDC developer conference comes just weeks after Google, Silicon Valley's other titan of tech, trickled out more details about Android Q, Apple's chief software rival. Today with iOS 13, it's Apple's turn to woo app-makers and wow future buyers with everything that iPhones and iPads running iOS 13 will soon be able to do.

Apple's ability to engage buyers with iOS 13 is particularly important in 2019. The iPhone-maker has seen iPhone sales slow in step with competitors across the board. Meanwhile, the next iPhones will likely lag behind other Android rivals in key features like support for 5G speeds, periscope zoom and a standalone night mode for ultraclear camera shots. But over the years, Apple has proven that it can create must-have software tools and apps, like FaceTime video and iMessage

The iOS 13 developer beta is available today, with the final version coming to iPhones this fall. Look for the public iOS 13 beta to arrive in July. (How you can download iOS 13 beta right now.) See all of today's Apple news

Dark mode for all

Dark mode, which replaces a light screen with a dark screen, comes across core apps in iOS 13, including the calendar, music, and photos apps. This appears to be system-wide, but we'll need to see if there are any exceptions. Dark mode is a popular trend across apps, and will come to Android Q, too.

That swipey keyboard

Android users have been swiping their keyboards to type for years, through a number of third-party apps, like Swype. At long last, Apple has added the ability, letting you trace a word to spell it out.

Apple calls it QuickPath typing. In theory, it's faster and just as accurate as pecking away at the virtual keyboard, and you still get spelling suggestions as you go along.

The feature is especially useful for one-handed typing.

Now you can swipe in addition to typing.

Portrait lighting for photos, rotate a video

A new photos tab gives you access to some of the new tools Apple's adding here. For example, you can now remove duplicate photos and highlight best shots.

Portrait lighting, the tool within your iPhone's native camera app, adds more lighting effects to smooth your skin -- you can also change the intensity and location of your light for portrait lighting.

More editing filters add accents called vignette, vibrance, auto enhance and noise reduction.

Photo editing gets a boost, too, with a new ability to adjust pictures by tapping and dragging with your finger. The editing tools also come to video, which means -- yes -- you can rotate a video if you accidentally shoot it in the wrong orientation. You can apply the new filters and video effects as well.

Other new camera features in iOS 13

  • The photo apps will automatically organize photos by year, month and date, which will make it easier for you to find photos.
  • Live photos and videos play as you scroll.
  • View photos based on each day, month or year.

Find My Phone and Find My Friends joins forces

The rumors were right. Apple folded Find my Phone and Find My Friends into a single app called Find My. While locating nearby friends is fine, the real value is in finding your lost or missing devices (e.g., the iPhone that fell behind the couch) even when they're offline, using a Bluetooth beacon

The tool is encrypted and anonymous, Apple says, and it won't let phone thieves install or reboot your iPhone unless you activate it.

Sign in with Apple won't share your email address

new privacy feature called Sign in with Apple logs you into accounts and apps without having to add your email address, which Apple says will protect users from third-party apps track that want to them.

This is Apple's version of logging in with Facebook and Google, with one major exception. Those tools can be used to track you online, but Apple's version will use your iPhone or iPad to authenticate your credentials when you log in. You tap to authenticate with Face ID without revealing any personal information about yourself.

You can also choose to share or hide your email address, and can ask Apple to create a random email for the app or service that forwards to your actual email address, therefore masking your real identity without making you use a junk account.

Apple also blocks apps to track your location from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and lets you decide if you'd like apps to ask your permission each time it requests your location data.

Siri finds a new voice

Siri, Apple's new voice assistant, gets an audio update in iOS 13. Instead of clipped voices, Apple is hoping the new Siri sounds smoother and more natural to your ears. Using AI software (a neural talk-to-speak network, specifically), Siri will speak with fewer gaps and non-human sounding modulations.

iOS 13's Siri also works better with AirPods, the HomePodCarPlay and Safari:

  • Create personalized shortcuts using a new Shortcuts app.
  • Suggested automations so you can customize your and create a template.
  • Siri reads messages as soon as they arrive and you can instantly respond.
  • Share a movie or song with friend with one tap.
  • Hand off a phone call or music from your iPhone to your HomePod.
  • CarPlay: Siri smart suggestions work here, like suggesting you open your garage door when you get close to home.
  • Siri Suggestions comes to the Safari browser.

Memoji avatars come to Messages, stickers

Apple's Messages apps will now get support for Memoji profiles, which puts a thumbnail of your Memoji (an emoji of your face) into the Messages app. New controls let you go in depth with customization, makeup, even adding braces to your teeth. You also get a sticker pack across your iOS 13 devices.

iMessages will also now work on Dual SIM phones (unfortunately, we don't have more detail than that).

New apps in iOS 13

  • Mail: Gets rich new fonts.
  • Notes: A new gallery view, support for shared folders.
  • Reminders: You can add details for when and where to remind you of an item.
  • Smart lists: Will let you tag a person in order to trigger sending a notification to another person, for example when you set up a time to talk.
  • Maps: Gets Apple Carplay support by the end of 2019. You'll be able to see roads, beaches, parks and buildings, tag a place for favorites. Collections will give you a list of favorites to share with friends. Look-around will give you a high-def 3D view of the area. Landscape view will smoothly move down the street, letting you tap labels to learn more about new places.

More new iOS 13 features

  • Send call spam straight to voice mail and silence unknown callers.
  • Mute thread in Mail.
  • Add attachments to events in Calendar.
  • Time-synced lyrics when you play music.
  • Support for 3D AR apps like Minecraft Earth, coming to iOS 13 this summer.
  • Face ID unlocking is now 30 percent faster.
  • Apps launch 2x faster.
  • Downloads are 50% smaller and updates 60% smaller.
  • Low data mode
  • 38 new language keyboards
  • Language selection per app

How iOS 13 Improves iPhone Battery Charging

iOS 13 bringing major improvements to iPhone battery charging

The upcoming release of iOS 13 due in September will include, among other major new features like the dark mode, improvements for the battery charging process on the iPhone.

Called optimized battery charging, this new capability is based on the existing charging system already available for the iPhone to help reduce battery degradation and thus increase the lifespan of an iPhone battery.

iPhones already come with a battery charging management system that allows the process of recharging to run faster until it reaches 80 percent and then slow down for the rest of 20 percent. This helps preserve premature battery degradation, albeit there have been a lot of complaints that the remaining 20 percent takes too long to complete.All-in on machine learningWhat Apple is aiming for with this new system is rely on machine learning in order to allow the battery management system to learn users’ daily charging routine and thus improve the process when the last 20 percent stage is reached.

In other words, when you plug in an iPhone, it recharges up to 80 percent just like before, but the difference is made in the last 20 percent. This means that completing this final stage could take more or less depending on your usage patterns, so for example if you leave the device plugged in during the night, it could take much longer to reach 100 percent.

“A new option helps slow the rate of battery aging by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged. iPhone learns from your daily charging routine so it can wait to finish charging past 80% until you need to use it,” Apple briefly explains.

Such an approach could help improve the battery life and reduce the time the iPhone spends fully charged and plugged in.

iOS 13 is projected to go live for all devices in September, and a developer build is already available for registered Apple devs.

iOS 13 Beta Confirms Apple Will Remove a Top iPhone Feature This Year

3D Touch debuted on the iPhone 6s

If you’re a big fan of 3D Touch on the iPhone, like I am, you’re in for a big disappointment this coming September.

Apple’s new iOS 13, which is supposed to bring so many welcome improvements, including a dark mode, will essentially mark the end of 3D Touch as we know it.

And the first beta of the new operating system provides us with a quick look at how Apple wants to get rid of this feature on new-generation iPhones, but also to disable it on older models.

Basically, the pressure-sensitive displays on the iPhone will become just an obsolete piece of technology once iOS 13 ships, as Apple wants to use a software system similar to the one on the iPhone XR to replace the hardware-based 3D Touch.New system already available on iPhone XRJust like on Android devices, users will be able to invoke 3D Touch options, like Peek and Pop and Home Screen Quick Actions, with nothing more than a long-press gesture. For example, a long-press on the icon of an app will display quick actions available for that app, all without the need for pressing harder on the screen, as it’s currently the case on 3D Touch-capable devices.

The long-press gesture will also generate a short vibration that will more or less simulate the experience with 3D Touch.

But as 9to5mac notes, iOS 13 removes some of the speed and convenience powered by 3D Touch, as a long press isn’t necessarily as fast as a harder press on the screen. While I think this is more or less just a matter of getting used to the new system, Apple is clearly aiming for more consistency here, while also gaining more room inside an iPhone by removing the components previously used for 3D Touch.

In other words, beginning with the debut of iOS 13 this September, all iPhones should feature 3D Touch-like gestured powered by this new software-powered capability. This means devices like iPhone SE will finally get advanced interaction despite the lack of 3D Touch hardware.
