YouTube’s new design stops working on Microsoft Chromium Edge

YouTube unsupported

Chromium-based Edge has been hit by a new glitch when running Google-owned YouTube. Some folks today noticed that YouTube opens with the classic interface in Edge browser and the new design is no longer available for some unknown reasons.

Google Meet, Google Docs and Google Drive were also marked unsupported in Chromium-based Edge. Today, Chromium Edge users have been confronted by a similar error informing them that YouTube’s new design is not available in the new browser.

YouTube throws up an error message when trying to access it from the new Edge. “Your browser is not supported. Try it with the latest Google Chrome” reads the message. The message recommends you to download Google Chrome or switch to any other supported browsers.

YouTube says it only supports Chrome, Firefox, Safari and (old) Edge. What’s more surprising is that YouTube had no issues until yesterday and this problem only popped up earlier today.

You can still go back to the YouTube homepage and browse the outdated classic look of the streaming service.

Google or Microsoft hasn’t acknowledged the problem, but it is likely to be another oopsie at Google’s end and it should be fixed in the next few hours.

Google's blocking new Microsoft Edge from accessing new design

Another accidental oops by Google that affects a competing web browser in a negative way; this time, users of the new Microsoft Edge browser are affected and the Google site that kicks Microsoft's browser this time is YouTube.

Microsoft Edge users may still access YouTube but they only get the old design at the time. Some may not mind, as the old design offers better performance than the new. Others may object to the blocking of the new layout on YouTube as it works perfectly fine in Microsoft's browser.

If you check out https://www.youtube.com/new/ in Microsoft Edge, you get a "your browser is not supported" message. That message is followed by the obligatory "get Google Chrome" instead message. Since there is no explanation as to why Edge is not supported while the classic Edge and other browsers are supported, some may switch to Google Chrome if the browser is not installed already.

google youtube not supported

Microsoft Edge users will notice that live chat is not working as well in the client at the time. YouTube displays a notification that the browser needs to be updated because it appears to be an older version.

There is no newer version, however.

live chat nono edge

The new Microsoft Edge browser is not available as a stable version at the time of writing and things may not work correctly in preview versions.

If a web browser supports features required to display a website on the other hand, that website should not go out of its way to block it from content or features.

If you change the user agent in the new Microsoft Edge, you will notice that you get access to the new YouTube design all of a sudden.

browser works

Live chat still does not work when you change the user agent though.

Closing Words

Microsoft has been anti-competitive in the past and some hold this against the company even today. My stance is that any form of anti-competitive behavior, especially from a position of power -- regardless if done on purpose, neglect, or accident -- is something that companies should be reprimanded for.

YouTube blocking Edge from functionality is not the first Google property that put a spoke in the new Microsoft Edge's wheel. Google Docs displayed an "unsupported browser" message to Edge users as well on any document page on the site.

Firefox was on the receiving end for a very long time and a former Mozilla executive accused Google recently of using a sustained pattern of "oops" and "delay" that hurt the browser immensely.

One interesting takeaway from this is that Google is still in a position to hurt competing browsers (be it actively or accidentally) even if these browsers use the same engine as Google Chrome.

YouTube Music is also not supported in Microsoft Chromium Edge

YouTube Music in Edge

Microsoft Chromium Edge is off to a steady start and browser has been praised by the community. While Google welcomed Microsoft to the ‘open-source’ Chromium community, some of the big services owned Google is not functioning properly in the new Edge.

Earlier today, users spotted that YouTube’s new design is not supported in new Edge. It turns out that Google has also not whitelisted the Chromium Edge browser on YouTube Music and you cannot use the music streaming service in the new browser.

If you visit YouTube Music in Microsoft Chromium-based Edge, you’ll be greeted by the error message “Sorry, YouTube Music is not optimized for your browser. Check for updates or try Google Chrome” and the service is not accessible.

Although the browser engine is same as Chrome, Google’s services appear to maintain a whitelist and Chromium Edge hasn’t been whitelisted by default as it has a new user-agent string. The old Edge is fully supported by YouTube, YouTube Music, Google Drive, Google Meet and Google Docs.

It’s not entirely clear when the problem first appeared and Google or Microsoft is yet to issue a statement on the problem.

The Easiest Way to Bypass Google’s “Bug” and Use New YouTube in Microsoft Edge

The old YouTube in Microsoft Edge without the extension

Microsoft is moving from EdgeHTML to Chromium for its very own Microsoft Edge browser, and this transition would bring the app not only to Windows 10, but also to previous Windows versions and macOS.

While you’d think that embracing Google Chrome’s engine would convince Google it’s time to show some love for Microsoft’s services, this isn’t really happening, and living proof is a recent block that the company has put in place on YouTube.

Google has recently released another overhaul of the YouTube user interface, and you can try it out by heading over to youtube.com right now. Just don’t use the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge because it’s not going to work.

What you’ll see, on the other hand, is an error message telling you Edge is not supported, despite being based on the same engine as Google Chrome.

While at some level it makes sense for Microsoft Edge not to be allowed to load all websites because it’s still in preview stage, this is a limitation that’s exclusive to Microsoft’s application, as all the other beta browsers out there can connect to the new YouTube just fine.NOTE: Google has already responded to claims of intentionally blocking Microsoft Edge on the new YouTube, explaining that it all happened accidentally because of a bug.“We're aware that users of a preview version of Chromium-based Edge are being redirected to the old version of YouTube. We’re working to address this issue. We're committed to supporting YouTube on Edge and apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing,” Google says.

This is the new YouTube loaded with the extension installed

Meanwhile, you can easily bypass Google’s restriction with a simple settings change in Microsoft Edge.

Because Google blocked access to YouTube at user agent level, preventing Microsoft’s browser from loading the new YouTube with a filter on the “Edg” string, you can easily instruct the browser to ignore it by switching to the Google Chrome agent.

Learn here how to change the user agent in the Chromium Microsoft Edge browser.

But the easiest way to get around Google’s block is actually an extension that was specifically created with this goal in mind.

Simply called “New YouTube Design for Edge Dev,” this extension modifies the user agent only for the new YouTube, leaving all the other settings untouched. In other words, browsing other sites won’t be impacted, and you should be able to load the new YouTube just fine.

Because Microsoft Edge is now based on the Chromium engine, it’s pretty easy to install the extension.

Simply head over to the extension page linked above and then click the Add to Chrome button. You also need to manually enable extensions from other sources in Microsoft Edge.

To do this, fire up the browser and then follow this path:

Microsoft Edge > browser menu > Extensions > Allow extensions from other stores

You can disable this option after installing the extension if you’d like to stick only with extensions from Microsoft’s verified add-on store.

To remove the extension, you can look for the YouTube icon in the toolbar in Microsoft Edge, right-click it, and then click the Remove button.

While Google says that a fix is on its way, there’s no ETA as to when it could land. Microsoft Edge preview is currently available only for Windows 10 and macOS. The Windows 10 installers can also be used on older versions of Windows, albeit not everything might be working as expected.

Microsoft hasn’t yet provided any release date for the stable version of the browser.
