The AchieVer
Windows 10 May 2019 Update could be blocked on some devices If you’re trying to install Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903) on a device running incompatible drivers and software, there’s a chance that the update won’t show up and Update Assistant will render a warning of incompatible software. The upgrade block could be placed on some devices due to compatibility problems. This could be associated with certain Intel driver versions, outdated anti-cheat software and other services that may have the potential to cause problems. As per multiple Reddit discussions and Twitter threads, some users are unable to install Windows 10 May 2019 Update on their devices. Microsoft has already acknowledged a bug with certain Intel driver versions that causes brightness problems. Microsoft has placed an upgrade block on such devices and a fix is being developed. “After updating to Window 10, version 1903, brightness settings may sometime appear as if changes applied took effect, yet the actual display brightness doesn’t change,” Microsoft explains in a support document. “To safeguard your update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on devices with certain Intel drivers from being offered Windows 10, version 1903, until this issue is resolved,” the company added. Unfortunately, Update Assistant doesn’t specify the problem with Windows 10 May 2019 Update. It only states that the PC has a driver or a service that isn’t ready for Windows 10 version 1903 and the update will be offered once the issue is resolved. In a thread, a Reddit user explains that Media Creation Tool may also block the update if incompatible driver or service is running. If the update is blocked on your device, you should install the latest versions of software such as Battleye and drivers or wait until a fix is available. You can also clean install a copy of Windows 10 May 2019 Update with Media Creation Tool or directly through ISO files. Source
The AchieVer
Windows 10 May 2019 Update may not install on some AMD PCs Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903) is finally here for production devices. While the rollout is happening in waves through Windows Update, anyone can still install the new version on their PCs with the Media Creation Tool. As reported recently, Windows 10 May 2019 Update has been blocked from install on PC with certain drivers and outdated services. It turns out that Windows 10 version 1903 will also not install on some systems powered by incompatible AMD RAID drivers, as per new information from both Microsoft and AMD. In a support document published recently, Microsoft says the May 2019 update may not install on certain AMD PCs and you will on receive a message that may look like the following: “A driver is installed that causes stability problems on Windows. This driver will be disabled. Check with your software/driver provider for an updated version that runs on this version of Windows,” the error reads. This happens on AMD Ryzen or AMD Ryzen Threadripper PCS with certain versions of AMD RAID drivers are not compatible with the Windows 10 May 2019 update. The update wouldn’t install on AMD PCs with the driver prior to version 9.2.0.105. “Version 9.2.0.105 and later versions of the AMD RAID drivers do not cause this issue. A computer that has these drivers installed can receive the May 2019 update,” the company explains. In its own support doc, AMD says that Windows 10 May 2019 Update introduces new Device Input/Output Control (IOCTL) requirements for certain categories of the device driver. Microsoft is blocking the update from install until updated RAID drivers are installed. If your AMP PC is not getting the update, make sure the AMD driver version is 9.2.0.105 or later and USB storage devices are not plugged in. Karlston
It would nice if the incompatible driver's name was shown in the message. As is, the message is only slightly more helpful than "Something went wrong"
The AchieVer
Buggy Drivers Block Windows 10 May 2019 Update on AMD Devices If your computer is equipped with an AMD processor and the installation of Windows 10 May 2019 Update fails, you’re not alone. Microsoft has recently confirmedthat installing Windows 10 May 2019 Update could fail on devices with certain versions of AMD RAID drivers with the following error: “AMD Ryzen™ or AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ configured in SATA or NVMe RAID mode. A driver is installed that causes stability problems on Windows. This driver will be disabled. Check with your software/driver provider for an updated version that runs on this version of Windows.” Specifically, AMD RAID drivers that are older than 9.2.0.105 are causing this issues, so you need to update to at least this version of a newer release to be able to install the May 2019 Update. No upgrade block in place just yetWhile the update might be offered to AMD devices anyway, the process of installing the new Windows 10 feature update fails immediately after beginning the process. “On computers that have AMD Ryzen or AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors, certain versions of AMD RAID drivers are not compatible with the Windows 10 May 2019 update. If a computer has these drivers installed and configured in RAID mode, it cannot install the May 2019 update of Windows 10. If you start the installation process, the process stops,” Microsoft says. Microsoft hasn’t introduced an upgrade block for the impacted AMD devices, so make sure you update to the latest version of the drivers, especially if you see the May 2019 Update pending for installation in Windows Update. Windows 10 May 2019 Update is rolling out in waves to devices across the world, as this approach allows Microsoft to detect any potential bugs before they hit a substantial number of devices. Users who want to manually install the update can turn to the Media Creation Tool. Source
