The Raspberry Pi Foundation has released a new version of its Debian-based Raspbian operating system for the tiny Raspberry Pi computers with various performance improvements and latest updates.

Powered by the Linux 4.14.98 kernel, Raspbian 2019-04-08 has been released this week and it's packed with a bunch of updated components, among which we can mention the Chromium 72 web browser, VLC 3.0.6 media player, RealVNC Server 6.4.0, and Adobe Flash Player 32.0.0.156 plugin.

Raspbian 2019-04-08 also includes new programs, such as the ethtool utility displaying and modifying various parameters of the network interface controllers and respective device drivers, the rng-tools utility related to random number generation in the Linux kernel.Performance improvements and optimisationsApart from the new and updated software, Raspbian 2019-04-08 introduces a new option in the startup wizard to let users set display underscan, support for PINN restore, support for viewing mounted external drives on the desktop by default, as well as various appearance tweaks.

Under the hood, the Raspbian 2019-04-08 release brings performance improvements to the SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) and pixman libraries, various tweaks to the SD Card Copier utility to reduce the number of copy failures, and improves compatibility with wpa_passphrase in the network plugin.

Raspbian 2019-04-08 is available for download right now through our free software portal, but existing users won't have to download the new image to update, just run the "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" command in a terminal emulator to apply all the latest updates.

For new installation, we recommend downloading the Raspbian 2019-04-08 image, which you can easily install on an SD Card to run on your tiny Raspberry Pi computer. Raspbian is compatible with all the Raspberry Pi models that the Raspberry Pi Foundation released and still supports.
