The AchieVer
What’s New in Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4493509 for Version 1809 The April 2019 Patch Tuesday rollout also brings new cumulative updates for Windows 10, including for the latest stable version known as the October 2018 Update. Also referred to as Windows 10 version 1809, the October update is available for all users, and it can be installed from Windows Update on any compatible device. The cumulative update for this particular OS version is KB4493509, and it increases the OS build number to 17763.437. The OS build number also helps check whether the update installed correctly, and you can check it out by typing winver in the Start menu. What’s new in this updateOne of the most important things about cumulative update KB4493509 is that it lands on a Patch Tuesday, which means that as compared to the other updates shipped throughout the month, its main purpose is to resolve security issues in Windows 10. So yes, KB4493509 does patch security vulnerabilities in the operating system, including in Edge and Internet Explorer, but also in the WSL, the Scripting engine, and other components. You can check out the full changelog in the box at the end of the article for full information on what’s being repaired in this cumulative update. This update resolves issues in the previous cumulative updates, including a fatal crash experienced due to per font EUDC. “Addresses an issue that occurs when you enable per font end-user-defined characters (EUDC). The system will stop working and a blue screen will appear at startup. This is not a common setting in non-Asian regions,” Microsoft says. KB4493509 installed correctly on my testing systems, but as we learned the hard way, we should wait for a few hours before determining whether a cumulative update is safe to install or not. Typically, such issues are discovered in the first 24 to 48 hours after the rollout kicks off. Source

KB4493509 Windows 10 Build 17763.437 Full Changelog For enterprises, Microsoft has addressed an issue that was experienced when the user enabled per font end-user-defined characters (EUDC). The bug resulted in an issue where the system stopped working and booted to a blue screen. Microsoft has fixed another bug that may cause apps that use MSXML6 to stop responding. Similarly, today’s patch also includes fixes for Internet Explorer where the browser and few other apps experience authentication issues. Today’s update also includes the general security updates to Microsoft Graphics Component, Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows Virtualization, Windows SQL components, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows MSXML, Windows Datacenter Networking, Windows Server, Windows Kernel, Microsoft JET Database Engine, Windows App Platform and Frameworks and Microsoft Edge. As you can see, all the changes are aimed at enterprises. However, the update apparently also includes underhood fixes and general performance improvements. Another patch for Windows 10 May 2019 Update Yesterday, Microsoft shipped the Windows 10 May 2019 Update to Insiders in the Release Preview ring. Microsoft also promised that cumulative updates will be pushed out to the May 2019 Update PCs in the Release Preview Ring before the public rollout in late May 2019. As the company advances towards the final development stage of the update, Build 18362.53 is now out for Windows 10 May 2019 Update devices and it comes with underhood fixes. Microsoft recently announced the Windows 10 May 2019 Update will go live for production devices next month. It is worth noting that software maker hasn’t provided a specific release date, but in the announcement post, the company stated that it plans to make the update available sometime in late May. The AchieVer
Known Issues in Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4493509 Windows 10 cumulative update KB4493509, which is available now for devices running the October 2018 Update (version 1809) comes with several bug fixes and security patches, but at the same time, it also includes a couple of known issues. Very important to know is that both issues that have already been acknowledged by Microsoft are borrowed from the previous cumulative updates. KB4493509 itself resolves a series of issues that were introduced by its predecessors, including an issue causing a Blue Screen of Death when enabling per font end-user-defined characters. As Microsoft explains, cumulative update KB4493509 comes with a bug hitting certain sites when running Internet Explorer. “After installing this update, Custom URI Schemes for Application Protocol handlers may not start the corresponding application for local intranet and trusted sites on Internet Explorer,” the company notes. The workaround is the same as in the case of previous cumulative updates, so you can just right-click the URL link to open it in a new window or tab.Fixes already in the worksThe second known issue is likely to hit enterprise users and not consumers, as it concerns the Preboot Execution Environment. “After installing this update, there may be issues using the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) to start a device from a Windows Deployment Services (WDS) server configured to use Variable Window Extension. This may cause the connection to the WDS server to terminate prematurely while downloading the image. This issue does not affect clients or devices that are not using Variable Window Extension,” the software giant says. In both cases, Microsoft explains that it’s already working on fixes, and they should be included in an upcoming cumulative update for Windows 10. No specific ETA has been provided though, so there’s a chance that the fix could land as part of the May 2019 Patch Tuesday rollout. spudboy
My symptoms from this update were more akin to "Widespread reports of freezing with yesterday’s Win7 and 8.1 Monthly Rollups, KB 4493472 and KB 4493446". Windows took 10 minutes to load to desktop + all startup apps vs pre-install of roughly 15 seconds. Trying to open any app would crash the entire system so bad that ctrl+alt_del wouldn't even open the task manager. After several hard reboots by having to completely cut the power to the pc, I booted into safe mode, uninstalled the update, reboot, and have had no issues since. spudboy
I narrowed it down to Avira Antivirus. Just as Sophos Antivirus has been found to be a source of the problem for the Win7 and 8.1 Monthly Rollups, Avira causes the issues for me on Win10. Guess I'll just keep the update uninstalled until Avira updates. Or uninstall Avira and keep KB4493509.
Screen
Having so much trouble with this 1809, the cumulative update came in and now like what i was experiencing before my wifi keeps on disconnecting randomly and i can't use that any more to do any thing web related. Thinking about doing a clean install with 1809 after 9~10 days due to members using the machine to play single player games. These hair pulling wifi troubles. Can i skip 1809 and go to stable 1903 any time soon? 😥 Either that or i will have to get back to 1803 and call it a day.

Looks like staying on 1803 and leapfrogging 1809 to 1903 is what Microsoft is moving towards...
