A preview version of Microsoft’s new Chromium-based browser is believed to be just around the corner, and after an experimental build leaked earlier this week, here’s the software giant dropping a hint that a release is imminent.

The official Microsoft Edge Insider extension for the new browser is now available for download from the Microsoft Store, technically allowing users to stay up to date with the progress in this testing program.

While it’s supposed to be installed by insiders running the preview version of Microsoft Edge, it can also be downloaded on devices running the current stable version of the browser, only that most of its functionality is disabled.Preview build likely around the cornerAs for the purpose of the extension, the Microsoft Store listing reveals that this add-on is in charge of Edge announcements, feature releases, known issues, and fixed issues, so insiders can basically receive information on any update that Microsoft makes public.

“Microsoft Edge Insider is the official extension for Microsoft Edge for Microsoft Edge Insiders. This extension puts an icon on the Microsoft Edge toolbar that receives notifications about the latest Microsoft Edge Announcements, Features, Known Issues, and Fixed Issues. Microsoft Edge Insider can also provide desktop notifications about important issues,” the description reads.

Additionally, the Microsoft Store product page indicates that the extension is available for canary, developer, and beta channels, which is also the confirmation that the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge is developed as part of similar channels, just like Google Chrome.

For the time being, Microsoft remains tight-lipped on everything related to the release of the new browser, but all signs seem to be indicating that the preview build could go live anytime soon.
