Razer Phone 3 Reportedly Not Dead, Expected to Launch in 2019

Razer hasn’t yet killed off the third generation of its gaming-oriented smartphone, according to a new report, despite the latest speculation in the mobile industry.

Razer hasn’t yet killed off the third generation of its gaming-oriented smartphone, according to a new report, despite the latest speculation in the mobile industry.

Back in February, sources with knowledge of the matter said Razer laid off approximately 2 percent of its employees, with the phone unit believed to be the most impacted.

This made many think that the Razer Phone 3 got the ax, especially because this niche market hasn’t really taken off. But on the other hand, as per Digitimes, not only that the third-generation Razer Phone is still alive and kicking, but other companies are also interested in launching similar models.

Including Nintendo, that is, as the company reportedly wants to develop a smartphone that would feature Switch integration. The device would be specifically focused on gaming, the report adds, and would also compete against models from Vivo and Xiaomi.Razer Phone 3 coming later this yearRazer is expected to unveil its new phone later this year, possibly in the fall, but up to this point, there are no specifics as to when Nintendo could take the wraps off its own model.

According to the cited source, Asustek Computer and Razer are already in an advanced phase of negotiations with Tencent in order to expand in the digital gaming market in China. By the looks of things, the Chinese market would thus become their main target.

However, investing in gaming smartphones has so far proved to be a rather risky business, as the sales in this category failed to reach the target that manufacturers expected.

Global shipments have barely reached 100,000 units a year, the same source notes, and despite already working on the third-generation model, the Razer Phone isn’t the best-selling device. Asus leads the charts for the time being, though the ranking could change in the coming years as more companies launch similar models.
