Global treaty could throw file-sharers off Internet after ‘three strikes’

Leaked details of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement being negotiated in secret by most of the world’s largest economies suggest Internet file-sharers could be blocked from accessing the Internet if they are repeatedly accused of sharing copyrighted material, say media and digital-rights watchdogs.

And the worst-case scenario could see popular Web sites like YouTube and Flickr shut down because of a provision in the treaty that would force them to monitor everything uploaded to the site for copyright violations.

Internet law professor Michael Geist published details of “leaked” portions of the discussions on ACTA on his blog Tuesday, as a new round of ACTA negotiations began in Seoul, South Korea. The US, along with all the countries of the European Union as well as Japan, Canada, Australia and a handful of other countries, are involved in the negotiations.

its funny they all come together for this one purpose, yet they still have no idea what the download scene is really like, theres DDL, usenet, internet relay chat, torrents and many other options and if they even come to an agreement and there is a ban on anyone downloading, there will already be workarounds with encryption and proxies or something of the like before they even get to act on anyone

Oh I would say that there is going to be a whole lot of "nothing" going on as it already is every day in increments. Slowly but surely, the ones in charge are dismantling the United States Constitution...but it's a little too late to do the right thing now.

All this world needs is 1 more huge problem and Obama will suspend the constitution, declare martial law, rise to full dictatorial leadership and remove the rights of all people within his country. Laugh at me now like usually most of you do. It's actually pretty sad that the only things that grab peoples attention and that are actually allowed in this forum has to do with technology while something far more important might be there to be talked about, it's simply not allowed AND THEN seen as if it was quackery.

When all of this happens, even all the other crazy stuff I posted in the past that was mocked and treated like it was crazy talk, I won't be the person you think about who informed you about all this because most people who enter into a realization IMMEDIATELY tend to think irrationally in comparison to those who had months or years to prepare. Nothing can stop it all once it officially begins really. Just a little heads up from the crazy guy that will be proven right soon enough.

This will just separate the n00b pirates from the genuine ones. I laugh at them if they get busted!

It's those n00b pirates who get caught that give the rest of us a bad rep. The battlefield is ever evolving, we just need to stay ahead of the rest and upgrade our skill-set.

So Leet, what you're saying that the internet should also utilize the principal which dominates the real world - give everything to the rich and nothing to the poor? The one good thing in the internet has been that you start off equally and stay equal. Okay, many people gain knowledge and start doing illegal stuff with better disguise, but to this day I have believed that in the pirating scene not everything is about reputation and money... People helped and still help others just out of generosity. Allowing only the "smart ones" to some privileges is pure... stupidity. I mean.... aah whatever.

What they're doing is not right and what you said Leet is not right either... you might have meant something else, but everybody starts out as a "n00b"... n00bs ought to be helped, not rejected. It sounds as disgusting as the actual world today is.

I'm talking about people who are careless and ignorant in the sense that they refuse to accept the fact that piracy requires a certain amount of knowledge and skill that can only be obtained from adequate research. For example, if you know your ISP is monitoring your p2p then what do you think of the person who refuses to go seek knowledge of a new way to work around the problem but instead decides to download more p2p and get busted? The fact remains that in this game, if somebody gets busted there isn't anything anyone else can do to save that person. What I said does not mean anything to do with the skilled hoarding the knowledge for themselves or anything like that, it has to do with the willingness of pirates to evolve to the new threats of the legal system. No relation to being rich or poor either. Seriously 3 strikes is very forgiving. Piracy is just as wrong as any other crime you know, there is no such thing as less wrong or more wrong, wrong is wrong. I'd imagine if they gave rapists and murderers 3 strikes the world would be very angry.

There is such a thing as wrong and more wrong... so you're saying stealing candy from a shop is as wrong as murder?

My country recently approved a law which gives prison sentence for petty thefts. For ex. you get caught stealing a bottle of beer, ice-cream, candy.. anything, and you are made into a prisoned criminal. While manslaughter and some murderers get away with probation. Sounds fair? Equally wrong? The fact is that there are equal people, and more equal people in this world... the same applies to right and wrong. One is more wrong than the other.

I don't consider stealing from big companies who screw people anyway as wrong as taking somebody's life or using somebody's body for their own please and scarring the victim for life (raping).

Okay, your new post cleared it a bit, because from the first post I concluded that you are a typical newcomer hater, who considers newbies a "bad rep for him". When in reality in the internet people should be educated like they are educated in real life... if one doesn't care about anything, including his/her own privacy/safety, it's his/hers own concern. Feeling glad that they get caught... personally it leaves me cold (I don't feel glad or bad). But if a n00b is willing to learn and screw big moneygreedy companies, then leet pirates should help not reject ;)

Of course... how do you think I got this name. ;)

I know it's wrong what I do, but I steal from the rich to help the poor so that's how I justify my wrongdoings to myself. Believe me people in my local scene here dislike me because I give away information for free that they like to make money from by exploiting the lack of knowledge of others. But those are few in numbers in comparison to the number of people who appreciate my help. I just like helping people, kleptomania is my game when it comes to software.

I don't like to call it piracy, that is a political term used by the companies to make it look so bad.

Real piracy is when you blow a town away with cannons, then rape, kill and burn what is left. No sane or moral person can equate torrenting albums or DL'ing a copy of Photoshop with that.

It is just a way to magnify it and throw it at our governments, along with the exaggerated stats (No one can lose 6 Billion a year and exist, let alone the past couple years bringing it profit).

I do see many of our rights globally being trampled in the name of protecting copyright. The rights we lose are infinitely more important and precious than licensing.

We shouldn't have to fear 3 strikes and hide our identities online, cutting off a person's internet is the loss of the right to information and to learn.

Not to mention people will just jump on their neighbor's wifi, get them in trouble with no trial, and them lose internet too.

I don't now about the others, but as for me, I take the term Pirate as a compliment :tooth:

Same here, but just saying that the term was chosen to make filesharing look like the ultimate crime.

Everything that involves people is about power(reputation, money, whatever more), it's sad, but it's the way it is. Why don't we just all realize this, we're all bad and unless we face this and try to do something about it, we will keep on being bad.

I'm bad, you're bad, he's bad, we're all bad.

Everything starts with intentions, even though your intentions might be good, you might still do a 'bad' thing. Just as well as people with bad intentions might do a 'good' thing. Good and bad is defined by what we think of as good or bad. When we all stop thinking about what is good or bad, everyone will turn bad, in the end...

Finalily some one said it!! i agree with shought 100% on this one =>

I also agree, because I believe that unfortunately for all, the human race is inherently selfish and evil, and you have to force yourself away from it.

It has been said that any man, given the chance, would be a tyrant.

It's the power and money that we seek, and this is what corrupts us, we as people want what is bad for us.

The industry has money and power and thinks that it can control the government and always get its way. I see them similar to the "spoiled brat" kind of kid.
