The AchieVer
Windows 10 patch breaks Destiny 2 and other games on some PCs Latest fix for Windows 10 October 2018 Update has unfortunate side-effects A new cumulative update for the latest version of Windows 10 is playing havoc with gaming performance on some users’ PCs, at least going by reports online. The patch in question is KB4482887 for Windows 10 October 2018 Update, which was very recently unleashed to deliver a bunch of fixes, including enabling ‘Retpoline’ which should improve the performance of PCs by mitigating any sluggishness caused by the Spectre variant 2 fix. However, rather ironically, the update seems to have had the reverse effect for some in certain games, delivering a big performance hit – although this may not have anything to do with the Retpoline fix (more on that later). Multiple threads have popped up on Reddit describing performance issues primarily with Destiny 2, but also with other games. One commenter said that their mouse settings felt wrong, and they were getting ‘much less’ than 60 frames per second in Destiny 2 on a seriously powerful rig with twin SLI RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards. Uninstalling the KB4482887 update fixed the problem (which apparently affects both Nvidia and AMD GPUs alike). There are multiple reports of serious Destiny 2 woes along these lines, and another Reddit thread observed “massive lag spikes in older games, like CoD4 and CoD MW2” and hugely laggy mouse performance. Again, these issues went away after uninstalling the update (and came back if it was reinstalled). Feed it back Chipping in on the former Reddit thread, a Microsoft employee said: “This is likely not related to Retpoline (Spectre mitigation) since it's not enabled for retail users yet (as of 3/4/2019).” The Microsoft staffer then urged anyone with gaming-related performance issues to submit feedback (providing a link which seems to be broken, but you can use the feedback hub). Note that the official response isn’t certain about it being unrelated to the Retpoline fix, but we do know that the latter is being deployed gradually as a phased rollout, so may not actually be live on a lot of PCs yet. However, perhaps those experiencing issues could be the “certain devices” for which Microsoft noted the Retpoline fix has gone live in these initial stages of deployment. Still, the Microsoft staff member clearly believes that any gaming performance hit probably isn’t related. At any rate, the takeaway for now is to dump KB4482887 (or avoid installation in the first place) if you’re experiencing sluggishness with Destiny 2 or any other games on Windows 10 October 2018 Update. Hopefully we’ll hear more about the exact root cause, and hopefully a resolution to the aforementioned issues, before too long. Source
Karlston
KB4482887 for Windows 10 1809 causes game performance issues Microsoft released the cumulative update KB4482887 for Windows 10 version 1809 on March 1, 2019 officially. The update had two known issues initially which Microsoft highlighted on the official Support page on the Microsoft website. The company added a third issue to the page today that confirms that the update is causing game performance issues with certain games. Microsoft mentions Destiny 2 specifically; users may experience mouse and graphics related performance issues in other desktop games as well. After installing KB4482887, users may notice graphics and mouse performance degradation with desktop gaming when playing certain games (eg: Destiny 2). Microsoft provides no information on the cause for the issue or the types of games that are affected by it. There is no workaround for the issue right now and Microsoft appears to be working on a solution. Microsoft suggests that gamers who experience the issue should remove the cumulative update KB4482887 from their devices in the meantime to resolve the issue. Gamers who have not updated Windows 10 PCs yet may want to delay the update to avoid performance related issues. Pro users may pause updates to block updates from being downloaded and installed on the device. Update uninstallation Tip: Check out our guide on uninstalling Windows Update for detailed instructions. Here is how you remove the update using the Control Panel: Use Windows-X to display the hidden menu and select Control Panel from the options. Select Uninstall a Program. Select View installed updates. Locate KB4482887 in the list. Right-click on the update and select Uninstall. Here is how you remove the update using the command prompt: Open an elevated command prompt, e.g. by opening the Start menu, typing cmd.exe, right-clicking on the result and selecting Run as Administrator. Or, by using Windows-X to display the "hidden" menu and selecting Command Prompt (admin) from the options. Run the command wusa /uninstall /kb:4482887 /quiet to uninstall the cumulative update. You need to restart the PC either way to complete the uninstallation. Closing words I don't play that many games anymore but could not detect any performance issue while playing Dota 2 (Auto Chess) and several boardgame conversions on a PC with KB4482887. Matrix
Latest Windows 10 update is causing issues with gaming performance and mice Microsoft is working on a fix. Until then, avoid the patch or uninstall it. In brief: Microsoft's latest cumulative update, KB4482887 (OS Build 17763.348), was supposed to bring many mainstream, quality of life improvements to Windows 10, including limited support on certain devices for the new retpoline patch that helps with Spectre mitigation performance. Instead, users are reporting performance issues with games and with mice. Microsoft has acknowledged this and is working on a solution. The most recent Windows 10 cumulative update, version 1809 KB4482887, is reportedly tanking performance in certain titles and causing adverse mouse effects. So, if following the February update rollout, you've noticed your mouse or games are misbehaving, it's likely nothing to do with your system but the operating system. In the release notes, Microsoft acknowledges the issue as known and notes users may see graphics and mouse performance degradation in games like Destiny 2. However, while the impact appears to be game specific rather than global, Destiny 2 is not the only title suffering. According to users on reddit, older games like Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are also pained by the update. Supposedly, other affected titles include the newly popular Apex Legends and Sea of Thieves. Ironically, KB4482887 also enabled the "retpoline" Spectre mitigation on certain devices. Although that's unlikely the culprit and has to be enabled manually. KB4482887 also comes with many other quality of life improvements for Windows 10, and since no major non-gaming issues have been reported, users that do not play games may have nothing to worry about. Microsoft has said it's working on a fix to be rolled out in a future update, and its official guidance is to uninstall KB4482887 and wait for further resolution. Original Article. C.G.B. Spender
More fearmongering from people who'd like the world to keep running on windows xp. I've got a fully updated gaming rig with this particular KB and got exactly 0 issues as always when I read some article like this. Far Cry New Dawn, Metro Exodus, DOOM, GTA V, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and all the rest of games I play run as silky smooth as before.
Misaki2010
I got this update as well, played FarCry Prima, FarCry 5, FarCry New Dawn, GTA 5, Diablo III, Subnautica, Tropico 6 Beta, Metro Exodus, Counter-Strike Global Offensive and a few others, had no problems. Alanon
It probably depends on specific hardware combos. I've never had any issues with any updates, but that's likely because I have a mainstream config. Folks with exotic CPU/GPU combos, I presume, will have more issues.
