Study: Teen smoking rates dropped after Washington legalized marijuana

Contrary to predictions, teen marijuana use declined in Washington state after recreational pot was legalized in 2012, a new study finds.

Researchers analyzed data from the Washington Healthy Youth Surveys of 2010-2012 and 2014-2016.

They found that marijuana use among eighth-graders fell from almost 10 percent to just over 7 percent. In 10th grade, pot use declined from nearly 20 percent to less than 18 percent. There was no change among 12th graders, the study found.

But while the findings are encouraging, there is not enough evidence to determine the long-term effects of legalization on youth marijuana use, said the researchers at the RAND Corporation and other organizations.

"These findings do not provide a final answer about how legalization ultimately may influence youth marijuana usage," said study co-author Rosalie Liccardo Pacula, co-director of RAND's Drug Policy Research Center.

"A variety of factors may influence the behavior of adolescents and those factors are likely to influence behaviors in different ways over time," Pacula said in a corporation news release.

Future research should look at how the availability of marijuana outlets, advertising and exposure to new products influence use, she said.

"Kids don't care about what happens in the state capital, they care about what happens in their own neighborhoods," Pacula said. "Commercialization in local neighborhoods is likely to be more important than changes in the law."

Other areas of future research should look at patterns of use by young people, according to the study authors.

The study was published Dec. 21 as a research letter in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.

who needs tobacco if you got pot

In my teens, I occasionally ran out of cigarettes due to money shortages. But I always had my ounce of weed nearby and I would smoke the damn stuff all day til I dropped down on the couch in the evening half comatose

Its not a drug its a medicine, taken in right way and in right amount it can treat a lot of diseases. But that means a lot of big pharma companies going bankrupt.

I wonder if some only used it as it was banned there.

As the ban would be lifted, the thrill of using something that is banned might be gone. Who knows if that might be the case for some people there.

They could have also done that before making it legal though. :P

I simply don't believe these statistics. Marijuana smoking is NOT LEGAL for teens. So who made this research and how they did it? Don't speculate... I'm quite sure they are FAKE. Weed smoking rates "before" and "after" are invented to write some shiny study. Years ago my sister, then coursing Communications in the university, proposed some "similar" study. She and two other friends made up about 200 polls among anonymous students, analyzed it and presented some "brilliant" conclusions... Oh, so you might say, not everyone is so dishonest... hahaha!!!

Dr.s done  the research  Julia A. Dilley, PhD,  Susan M. Richardson, MPh; Beau Kilmer, PhD , As far as it being legal for adults , now it puts it  in the same class as under age drinkers were  teens binge drink  and consume more to drink than adults do.   were they can say hey man if you buy  me some weed ill get you high and buy your  gas . Weed being illegal for adults  or teens don't mean more people are going  to use  it  . Were i live it's still illegal for everyone but the price is really cheap because its hard to sell  it, people rather buy pills  or coke so there's not been no big demand for it since the 90s around here .

You smoke weed you cant pass a drug test the other stuff goes out of your urine faster plus the other stuff is physically  and mentality   addictive . weed is the most harmless substance  there is, it's just mentality addictive you will be just fine if you don't have it you want go in withdrawals and die or overdose  from it.

i  quit smoking weed in the late 90s it was easy to quit, it was not hard to quit like drinking was witch i didn't quit drinking tell  in the 1st decade of the 2000s. for me when i was a teen weed was more easy to get than  stuff to drink was  because it was illegal for everyone  . Were if i wanted to drink i had get a adult to go in and get it unless i bought moonshine witch is illegal homemade whiskey witch i  always kept a pint  of it  when i was a teen , my weedman sold it as well.  When i was 15 or 16 i was a weedman and i was already burned out . Its like up in Canada were you can buy tobacco cheaper if you get it on the RES  were they don't have no taxes ,soon you will be able to get weed off the Res cheaper than buying it leagl. Moonshine on the black market is the same way  its cheaper than buying bonded .  :tooth:
