International Crisis Group 'doing everything possible' to find its employee, secure release

The detention of Canadian Michael Kovrig follows the arrest in Canada of the chief financial officer of China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd on Dec. 1. Meng Wanzhou's bail hearing continues Tuesday in Vancouver.(International Crisis Group)

A former Canadian diplomat has been detained in China, two sources said on Tuesday, and his current employer, the International Crisis Group, said it was seeking his prompt and safe release.

Michael Kovrig's detention comes after police in Canada arrested the chief financial officer of China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd on Dec. 1 at the request of U.S. authorities, a move that infuriated Beijing.

It was not immediately clear if the cases were related, but the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver has stoked fears of reprisals against the foreign business community in China.

"International Crisis Group is aware of reports that its North East Asia Senior Adviser, Michael Kovrig, has been detained in China," the think-tank said in a statement.

"We are doing everything possible to secure additional information on Michael's whereabouts as well as his prompt and safe release," it added.

China's Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Public Security did not respond immediately to questions faxed earlier about Kovrig's detention.

The exact reason for the detention was not immediately clear.

The Canadian Embassy declined to comment, referring queries to Ottawa.

Calls to Kovrig's phones were not answered.

Kovrig, a Mandarin speaker, has been working as a full-time expert for the International Crisis Group since February 2017.

From 2003 to 2016, he worked as a diplomat with stints in Beijing and Hong Kong, among others, according to his profile on LinkedIn.

This is normal  for China but when Canada or the USA does it to someone the Left wing media tries to scare people . If people get took prisoner over in China they knew the risk of it  they even killed many Amercains  said they was the CIA,  Tech Giants are over there for greed and there own benefit just like Huawei was in the USA for there own benefit  tell the govt ban them they even hired a guy from the Midwest USA that didnt know nothing about tech to run it to make people  trust them.

But  normal people  are jailed all the time and no one cares .

The news is fresh.  The tradition of taking prisoners and holding them is very old, of course.

Its new news but and eye for and eye just has the opposite effect and makes people trust China even less  and it don't solve nothing  sovereign nations won't negotiate  with hostage takers they never have and never will.

    Nice to hear this acknowledgement.

Why does it matter  if acknowledge its new or not?  its new but it's not it's  the same old :shit: for China dayin  and day out they even arrest there own for for being westernized so anyone from the west should know they may go there and never comeback one day . Even in the USA  the system can swallow you up and take your freedom away what happen to Ming is no different that what can happen to anyone of us if they suspect us of a crime and think they have enough evidence to proceed  and China should not start a anti Chinese movement in the  USA like we had before were we ban all travel to and from, because unlike China we have millions of  Chinese who live here because they want too,  there not here for greed many cook and work doing low wage jobs and they will make it bad on there own people who live here,

That's just my opinion its normal for China i just see it as history repeating itself  . it don't matter just like the news want free Ming or Michael  taking hostages will just cause problems were the west will ban all trade with China if the UN gets pissed off. They just hurting themselves  and how logical is that?

Always  countries do stupid things that make the other country mad when all Governments are to blame . They always pointing  a finger at each other and pointing 4 fingers  back at themselves and the media makes a show out of it, no wonder we have Anarchists who hate all forums of Government.

china is just geting started wait for more things thats for sure  they want her back and if she not back  things will not get better  thats for sure

lol , i don't care if they arrest the people from the Town i'm from over there , it will just be karma coming back on the greedy rich who sent millions of our jobs over there . Fact is other than human rights activist no one cares .  you don't realize how much money China stands to lose ...98% of the  USA is going on with there daily lives and don't even care. This may be a hot topic on social media here or there tell the next story takes its place . i love it i hope it bust up all trade with China and we have to start making our own stuff again .   We had many hostages took from other countries before and it just made us never to trade with them anymore. We even forgave many after  so many years  in acts of war . you seem to forget the west have dealt with far worse  than  people being took hostage in someplace they not from to begin with . We even fought in World Wars  along side Russia and China  to save the world from National Socialism.

You know what the worlds Savior is , it's the nuclear bomb and fear of self destruction  it's the only thing that's kept the peace so long and the USA so far has been the only ones crazy enough to have used it once and so far and out of fear no one  wanted to die from a atomic war . if that happens the ones left will kill everyone else before they die and then we all die and they will be no more war because we will be dead..  So i call bullshit  just like the Cold War was no one had the balls to push the button again.

Only 2 things saved the world back then ,  one was Japan  didn't have nukes to shoot back and two the president who ordered  that A bomb  didn't  allow MacArthur to have more nukes so they signed a paper that the military  don't control the nukes only the president could launch them . MacArthur was going to blow Asia off the map right after World War 2 lucky for them, the president thought MacArthur was insane  and did not give him the bombs he wanted .

The problem with love people fall out of love everyday and it causes heart break,  but family love don't end because blood is thicker than water . :lmao:
