Google may shut down its news service in Europe

Google may shut down its Google News service in the European Union (EU) if a proposed “link tax” for using news stories comes into force in member countries, The Guardian reported.

According to the new copyright directive, adopted by the European Parliament on September 12, tech giants must pay for work of artists and journalists which they use.

To put the rule changes into effect, individual member countries would have to draft local laws.

Google is deeply concerned about the current proposals, which are designed to compensate struggling news publishers if snippets of their articles appear in search results, Richard Gingras, the search engine’s Vice President of News told the Guardian.

The future of Google News could depend on whether the EU was willing to alter the phrasing of the legislation, he said.

“We can’t make a decision until we see the final language,” he was quoted as saying.

This is not the first time an attempt is being made to charge Google for links. In 2014, Spain passed a law requiring aggregation sites to pay for news links.

Google then decided to close down the service for Spanish consumers.

Traditional media outlets tend to blame Google for sucking up much of the advertising revenue which used to prop up print newspapers, the Guardian reported.

But many news websites also depend on the service to drive traffic to their websites.

Google News is not directly a profit-making business for the company, while it does encourage users to spend more time on the company’s websites, Gingras said, adding that the search giant does not put any advertising in Google News.

trying to hide real news  smart

It don't have nothing to do with hiding the  news,  it got to  do with the EU wants to charge them a  link tax  for providing a free service that don't even have any ads. Its not like YouTube  were they monetize any news you look for.  Google News and Google translate dont have ads. only thing Google gets  from it is PR  . In my opinion they really wouldnt be losing any thing  since they messed  it up with it's new design  but still  many people in the EU like it and don't want to see it go. I don't use it anymore because  it a pain to use and loads slow now and has very little results .

A debate about it is going on here  at Hacker News

I get no ads on YouTube  because i use and ad blocker if i  want to watch drm protected content , but most stuff is not protected by drm  on YouTube now just free movies and a few other things are   99% of stuff  i just copy the link  and put it in FreeTube  app  witch is YouTube without using YouTube api  .They  are using Invidious API  now  and it works as same as YouTube in the app .with no ads.

If YouTube  don't show no ads  much  it means they not pay RT anything much .  In the USA  when  they watch RT or al jazeera   on YouTube without and adblocker they get a warning that it state-funded news broadcasts now. They do the same  with state state-funded news broadcasts from the USA   like Radio Free America news. They have filters for adblockers that remove most all annoyances on  the site but UBO  block Google ads in the videos by default so far very good.
