Apple: People Will Upgrade to Macs, Not Win 7

Windows 7 will be launching a week from today, and many are looking to it as a revitalization of the PC industry. While every new release of Windows does bring with it a sense of newness, Vista failed to convince those happily running XP that newer was better.

The upcoming version of Windows hitting next week is better than Vista, which has PC business excited. Most will agree that Windows 7 gets things right and will finally get those still working off XP machines to finally upgrade.

With such a compelling, reinvigorated PC operating system coming out, one would think that Apple would be worried that PC would become the popular kid in school again. But Apple isn't worried at all. In fact, Apple sees the release of Windows 7 as an opportunity to snatch even more users over to the Mac camp.

"It presents a very good opportunity for us," says Philip W. Schiller, Apple's senior vice-president for marketing, in a BusinessWeek report.

Schiller reasons that those running Windows XP machines may view the upgrade to Windows 7 as too complicated and daunting, giving customers a reason to ditch PC for Mac instead.

"Any user that reads all those steps is probably going to freak out. If you have to go through all that, why not just buy a Mac?" says Schiller.

Granted, users going from XP to 7 will have to perform clean installs, as in-place upgrades are only supported from Windows Vista. Schiller doesn't believe that many users will upgrade to Windows 7, at least not as many as Mac users who have upgraded to the $29 Snow Leopard.

"I expect Snow Leopard will have an amazing upgrade rate, and Windows 7 won't," he said.

Earlier this week, we reported historical evidence that showed Mac sales increasing with each release of a new Windows version.

That's called wishful thinking! LOL

"Any user that reads all those steps is probably going to freak out. If you have to go through all that, why not just buy a Mac?" says Schiller.

Yeah right! If anyone wants to ditch the Windows then the only viable option I see is Linux not Mac, but that's just me.

Probably after my version is downgraded from 'human' to 'bot.' crazy.gif

It's a clear psychological advertisement by Apple. An XP user will read it and maybe say: "he's right, why not turn to Mac"... It's all mind-games and advertising. Nothing special about this "news".

Ding Ding Ding! He's got it right :)

Still kind of sad that people actually buy into this crap... Just as stupid as those TV-ads 'Do you want to know when you're going to die? Text your birthday to ....', 'When will you meet 'the one'(no, not the guy from the matrix :P), text your birthday to ....' :frusty:

shought, you're completely right... and every single SMS costs like 2 bottles of beer. And since they still have the money to buy advertising time in TV, people apparently buy into this crap.

Same reasoning I constantly apply ;)

Well, if you think about it, it's a good thing it does... I mean otherwise the people buying into this crap would buy two more bottles of beer every week, ruining even more of their already limited amount of brain cells

If someone was scared away from Windows by complicated steps, why would they switch to Linux? That makes no sense whatsoever.

The OSs that are based on Linux are said to be great. Many of my friends use Linux based OS on virtual machine.

All I want to say is that the author thinks PC users, in general, are stupid and misguided.

correct me if wrong here...isn't Apple's cash cow the i-pod and i-phone in that order and macs a distant third money maker. I mean come on...if you want an mp3 player go with the best... get i-pod... windows based systems... even crappy Vista are not the crap apple wishes they were or everyone WOULD have a mac without them having to spend the millions they did with the great apple vs pc ad campaign.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but I have to disagree. Personally, I'll never buy that thing, it's way overpriced and iTunes is EVIL lol

IMHO, if you want a good PMP (Portable Media Player) go buy a Creative product, they offer a great variety of models suiting pretty much all tastes. And even their latest model the Zen X-Fi 8gb costs less than the iPod Nano 4gb and I'm pretty sure that the X-Fi offers better quality, just my 2 cents :)

You're right, it doesn't make any sense, they should switch to using paper and pencil ;) Nice and easy :P

(Not making fun of you, just the people that think about upgrading as 'all those difficult steps' ;))

difficult steps to upgrade eh? then migrating to mac is the solution?? wtf?! it'd take ages to just move all ur files to the mac from ur pc, a normal user wouldn't probably get round that.. and then he'll notice apps aren't working.. now that's gonna get apple fans :frusty:

k, it was obviously psychological advertising, but just too pathetic.. i think it just shows how sad those ppl are.

First, iPod offers the best quality of sound. It's the only product of Apple that I dont hate.

ANW off to Mac. Can you run windows programs and files on a Mac? The favorite files that are stored on my PC. I dont think so. You need to do somethin to the files, I forgot what it's called, to make it work in Mac. So you really think it can be more easy to upgrade from Vista/XP to Mac, I dont think so.

Yeah haha. Installing 7 was even less work than installing Vista.
