Microsoft Teases File Explorer Updates in Windows 10 19H1

More refinements planned in future preview builds

Microsoft today rolled out Windows 10 preview build 18277 with several major improvements, but in addition to announcing new features, the software giant also teased some more changes coming to users in the upcoming OS feature update codenamed 19H1.

In the next few builds, Windows 10 insiders will receive early access to further File Explorer improvements, though the company has remained tight-lipped on any specifics for now.

The teaser is included in the release notes of this new build, and Microsoft says the following:

“Some Insiders may notice small differences in File Explorer over the coming flights – we’ll have more to share later about this later.”

Even though no details were released as to how Microsoft plans to refine the experience with File Explorer in the coming builds, it looks like some changes are already available in this build.

File Explorer now comes with an updated “date modified” column for files stored on the system, as you can see in the screenshot attached to the article. Instead of the date and time when files were modified, Windows now shows how many hours ago you saved the last changes.

Coming to all users in 19H1

There may be more to come in Windows 10 19H1 for File Explorer, but for now, we’ll just have to wait and see what Microsoft is working on in this regard.

File Explorer has recently been refreshed with a dark mode in Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809). As one of the most requested Windows 10 feature, the dark mode brings File Explorer in line with the rest of the operating system, which itself comes with a dark visual style for the entire UI and apps.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update is currently on hold after Microsoft suspended the rollout due to a critical bug removing user files during the upgrade, therefore you’ll be able to try out the dark theme after the release resumes.

At first I was like, what's the big deal here. Then I got reminded how often I made a mistake over misreading one digit in that very column. Good addition, assuming it makes it to the final release. I mean... whatever became of the Sets feature?
