Windows 10 Version 1809 Bug Removes Overwrite Confirmation from ZIP Files

Here’s another bug you didn’t expect in a final update

The Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) rollout is still on hold due to the critical bug that caused the removal of user files, but those who installed it keep reporting more and more issues nearly on a daily basis.

This time, it looks like another glitch in the October update causes the overwrite confirmation to be missing from ZIP files.

In a discussion thread on Reddit, several users confirm that when extracting one specific file from an archive to a location where an item with the same name exists causes the data to be overwritten automatically, with no warning displayed.

Working fine on version 1803

The bug doesn’t exist on the April update (version 1803), and it causes the overwritten file to be lost.

“I noticed that whenever I move something out of a zip, the "do you want to replace these files" dialogue never shows up, it just does it. I've reinstalled windows and it still does it, it's only on the October update. Pretty nasty bug since you can accidentally overwrite a file and have no way of getting it back,” user ToppestOfDogs reports.

Several other users confirmed this happens on their systems as well. There’s no indication that this is a bug or normal behavior, but I really hope there’s something wrong with the October update and Microsoft didn’t actually think this is the right approach when extracting files.

Microsoft hasn’t yet acknowledged the problem, but given the rollout of the October 2018 Update isn’t yet resumed, the company has more time to look into the matter and deliver a potential fix.

The software giant has already resolved the original bug that caused the suspension of the rollout and it is currently testing it with help from Windows insiders in the Slow and Release Preview rings. No ETA has been provided as to when users would be allowed to download it again.

Have always preferred to configure my own archivers (WinRAR and 7z) with the overwrite confirmation prompt duly removed.

Woody's take...

Another reported file wiping problem with Win10 1809

From ToppestOfDogs on Reddit:

Ever since the October [Win10 1809] update, the overwrite confirmation is missing from zip files

I noticed that whenever I move something out of a zip, the “do you want to replace these files” dialogue never shows up, it just does it.

I’ve reinstalled windows and it still does it, it’s only on the October update. Pretty nasty bug since you can accidentally overwrite a file and have no way of getting it back

And from Wazhai, same thread, also on AskWoody:

This seems to be a very serious and widespread problem which could lead to user data loss. This is another thread about it. A reply would be very much appreciated.

The issue is that in 1809, overwriting files by extracting from an archive using File Explorer doesn’t result in an overwrite prompt dialogue and also doesn’t replace any files at all; it just fails silently. There are also some reports that it did overwrite items, but did so silently without asking.

From microl, also in Reddit:

When dragging newer files (with same name as in the destination folder) from a compressed folder to a regular folder it looks like the file copy happens, you can see the transfer progress, but when you check after no files have been updated. Anybody else have this?

It’s not clear if the reports are from the latest-latest version of 1809. Jenmsft has been copied on the Reddit posts. Remains to be seen if this new data-eating bug in 1809 will be fixed before it ships.

Thanks, Wazhai.

At lest they didn't release it back  into the wild witch shows progress,  so  it only effects insiders that  is was what they signed up for was to be beta testers  and i guess it effects  people who insisted on installing it  blindly  .. But  what will be the picture that tells the story,  will be when the spring update comes out general release does it happen again ? I dont care about installing this version of windows by the time they gets the serious bugs out of it,  spring update will be out. :tooth:

That's exactly right, they signed up to be beta testers but have failed. How I see it...

Windows Insiders -  unskilled, unprofessional Windows 10 alpha testers who mostly are in it only to have the-latest-and-shiniest and don't use it for real life stuff so find few if any bugs. The few that test properly and find destructive bugs report them to Microsoft who promptly ignores the reports.

Windows 10 Home & Pro users - the real Windows 10 beta testers. The real Windows 10 victims.

Windows 10 Enterprise users - get quality updates only after they've wreaked havoc on Home & Pro users.
