Win 7 Virtual XP Mode

I installed MS Virtual PC and Virtual XP Mode in my W7 Ultimate system and I must say I was fairly impressed with it. But I've never used a virtual machine before so maybe I'm easily impressed.

Anyway, I was wondering, how effective do you think Virtual XP Mode would be as a safe "sandbox" to use when working with known malware such as a keygen that one knows really contains malware?

Do you think, for example, that copying the infected keygen over to the Virtual XP machine and using it in the virtual machine to generate a serial would be effective in protecting one's real physical host OS (i.e., Win 7) from becoming infected?

And then, I suppose one could either try to scan and clean the virtual machine or just uninstall and reinstall XP Mode again if it couldn't easily be cleaned.

Not quite sure, I've been doing this with VMWare in the past, but I'm not sure if XP Mode has the same functionality...

Edit: Read this, I gotta go to school :P

I guess what concerns me are the "integration" features of Virtual PC and Virtual XP Mode. But I did one test and the resulting infection was contained to the virtual XP machine and I was able to subsequently clean it with MBAM. So it's obviously better than nothing, but I doubt it's foolproof.

Not quite sure of this, as in VMware, you could set it so that upon restart, all the previous 'virus' or whatever would be gone.

What I mean by "integration" features is that there are a few points of integration between the host machine and the virtual machine (for example, the virtual machine can use the host internet connection and the clipboard is shared, to name two I can think of) which leads me to believe that it would be possible for properly designed malware to recognize it is in a virtual machine and somehow exploit the integration between the virtual and host machines to spread from the virtual machine to the host. But even if not 100% foolproof, it's got to be better than nothing.

PsychoticxBloodxLust

the purpose of virtual xp mode is to allow older software and devices that are not supported under vista or windows 7 to be used, its not a true sandbox enviroment, i would vmware or something similar for that but thats my own opinion, i use xp mode for a a fineance software as well as for playing around with my old graphing calculator and some other legacy non supported vista 7 devices
