The October 2018 Update is preventing modern apps from connecting to the internet for some [Update]

Microsoft's latest feature update for Windows 10 may have been a little too rushed. Since its release, users have encountered a host of bugs relating to Task Manager, Intel drivers and more; some users have even seen their data deleted after the update.

The newest bug encountered by users is a lack of connectivity in some apps following the update. A report on Microsoft's support forums shows users complaining about Edge, Mail, Calendar, and News being unable to connect to the internet.

One user writes:

After installing the Windows 10 October 2018 update (version 1809), Microsoft Store apps are no longer able to connect to the Internet. For example, Microsoft Edge is unable to connect to any websites, displaying the message, “Hmmm...can’t reach this page.” Apps like Mail, Calendar, and News are not working properly. And Microsoft Store says to check my connection.

Non-Store apps, such as Internet Explorer, are still able to connect to the Internet.

Microsoft has since confirmed that it is an issue that the company is aware of, and working on fixing. A Microsoft employee stated that the problem only affects users who have IPv6 disabled. While the company works on a fix, users are recommended to circumvent the problem by enabling IPv6 in their network settings as follows:

  1. Open the Settings app and select Networking & Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Select the network adapter you're using (by clicking the appropriate link next to “Connections”) and select Properties.
  3. On the Networking tab, select the checkbox next to Internet Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
  4. Select OK to save your changes.

As our own Rich Woods explains, the company's changes to how it propagates Windows releases earlier this year may be causing undue strain and could be part of why both the April and the October 2018 updates experienced such early pains.

That the company decided to entirely skip the Release Preview ring this time around probably didn't help matters, either.

Update: It seems network profile settings may be an additional factor causing the connectivity issues, even if IPv6 is enabled. A subsequent response by another Microsoft employee on the support thread offers the following solution if you're still experiencing issues after IPv6 is enabled:

If you still having issues after enabling IPv6, I suggest changing your network profile to Public. Go to Settings, Network & Internet and click on Change connection properties. Under Network profile, click on Public.

If that doesn’t work, run Network reset. This will reinstall your network adapters and set other networking components back to their original settings. You might need to reinstall any VPN software or virtual switches after. Go to Settings, Network & Internet and click on Network reset. Click on Reset now.

Most people  over at Microsoft say if  they do the suggested work around  witch is  enable ipv6 , Edge and store apps, still dont work .. It  only effects people who use Edge and apps that have to be online from the store .If you cant get it to work, the only thing  you can do is roll back, tell they fix it in a windows update, if you must have mobile apps. It don't effect legacy apps  ..

Microsoft keeps changing around the subsystem and pushing out its betas on the consumer,  so they  can find the bugs left in it  so it will be stable for enterprise .  It's  like when i used Windows 10 i  could not use my old rules from my firewall app  with the new version  because they changed networking around,  i had to make new rules . I got tired of fooling with bugs and switch back to windows 8.1 when  RS 4 came out , March 2018 i stop using Windows 10. After using Windows 10 off and on  for  almost  3 years and it it still never got stable because it cant because of major upgrades every 6 months   i threw in the towel. :towel:

Here it is 3 years and almost 3 months later and still Microsoft  is borking  peoples machines on upgrades its a never ending cycle of bugs. :naughty:

Is Edge working  after you reset the network?  some say they got the store working after they enable IPv6 but Edge still want work. bad thing about enabling IPv6 some  vpns leak if you don't disable that . According to Microsoft If  you  didn't disable IPv6 it shouldn't effect you lol.

Yes Edge works. Although it failed to detect network at first after a repair and reboot both store and edge started working..Got the solution from reddit.

It was a Microsoft forum mod who posted the issue.  The Microsoft Employee gave them a non working fix.

Lonnie_L who posted the issue  didn't say nothing about if he disabled IPv6,  so not sure  if he did or not.

But and Microsoft Employee says there's a bug with turning off IPv6 that does the same thing and turning on IPv6 will fix it and others say using Sophos Endpoint caused it to happen as well.

Some say they tried repair  it did not work for them

Hello,

I had to roll back to v1803 because the Microsoft Store and Edge could not connect to the internet.  I tried a repair and a Reset in Applications. I also could not connect to help and support. I was able to get online with Firefox.  I did use Microsoft Windows 10 Assistant.  I'll have to wait till Windows Update comes to me on my Alienware 17R4 it seems or install 1809 from a media usb as mentioned by others.

Seems its happening to people who upgrade more than clean installs some are suggesting to clean install it.

Some guy is saying Switching the network from "private" to "public" fixes the problem.

Upgrade install. Had IPv6 disabled prior to installing. Edge doesn't work (but I don't use it anyway), but all other store apps I use work fine for me, as well as the store itself.

Success here on two 10 ent. installs, both set to public network; WinDefender only protection.
