The manual download method failing for some

The more PCs get the new Windows 10 October 2018 Update, the bigger the number of reports pointing to various issues.

Today, a post on Microsoft’s Community forums indicates that there’s an error experienced by some users who are trying to update to Windows 10 October 2018 Update via Windows Update.

While for the time being this doesn’t seem to be a widespread problem, the post was published by a volunteer moderator on the Microsoft forums, and it has already been pinned, which signals an issue that could potentially affect more users.

At the time of writing this article, a total of 29 Microsoft users have clicked the “I have the same question” button, indicating that more information on the problem is required.

The post itself is rather vague and only states that ‘Windows 10 October update in my Windows update shows error while downloading,” adding that “when I click Check for Updates in Windows Update, it shows up an error code.”

Manual downloads not available for everyone

Microsoft hasn’t yet offered more info on this report, but what you should know is that the manual download option available in Windows Update isn’t enabled on all PCs.

Only PCs that are supposed to benefit from a smooth upgrade are allowed to manually download and install the October 2018 Update, so if the new version doesn’t show up, you better wait until Microsoft gets it ready for your computer.

The alternative is switching to the Media Creation Tool, which lets you download the new OS version and perform the upgrade by bypassing the locks that may be implemented in Windows Update. This, however, means that you could still hit a number of compatibility issues.

The automatic rollout of Windows 10 October 2018 Update uses machine learning to determine which systems should get the new update, and judging from the April 2018 Update, broad availability should be announced in just a few months.

I wonder which option is best ; upgrading with DVD, or with the "Upgrade-assistent " / Windows-update ( inside Windows)

Bootable USB is the preferred method for many:

How to Create a Bootable USB Drive to Clean-Install Windows 10 Version 1809

Easy steps to deploy the new OS version on several PCs

Windows 10 October 2018 Update can be downloaded right now from Windows Update, as Microsoft has tried to make the manual updating system much more seamless.

Technically, all it takes is a simple check for updates for Windows 10 version 1809 to show up, and then the process is performed all automatically.

As you can easily figure out, this makes it possible for a Windows 10 system to update to the Windows 10 October 2018 Update effortlessly, but this method can only be used on one PC at a time.

Furthermore, it only allows for an update, and not for a clean install, so if you want to start from scratch, you’ll have to think of a different method to get the October update.

Fortunately, such a solution does exist, and it allows you to easily create a bootable USB drive that can then be used to clean-install Windows 10 October 2018 Update or to upgrade more systems without an Internet connection to this new release.

Microsoft itself has created a pretty seamless way to build this bootable USB flash drive, and it all comes down to the Media Creation Tool that many people have already used.

Windows 10 Media Creation Tool

How to create the bootable USB drive

Basically, the whole thing relies on a several-step wizard. The first step involves downloading the latest version of the Media Creation Tool – note that this most recent build is required because it has been specifically updated to download Windows 10 version 1809.

Once it’s downloaded, launch the Media Creation Tool and click Accept when you are presented with the license terms. You’ll be then asked to choose what you want to do with the app, with two options displays: upgrade the local computer that you’re currently using or create removable media which can be used for updating other PCs or performing a clean install.

Select the option that reads “Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC.

The next step requires you to configure the language, edition, and architecture of the Windows 10 version that you need to copy to the USB drive. If you want to use the same settings as on the PC you’re using, just check the option that reads “Use the recommended options for this PC.” Click next to advance.

Media Creation Tool then prompts you to choose the media you want to use, and this time there are two options: a USB removable drive or an ISO file – the ISO image lets you store a Windows 10 image on the local drives, which can then be used to create other bootable drives or install the OS in a virtual machine.

Choose the option that reads “USB flash drive” and then insert the drive into the USB port of your device.

Note that the USB drive needs to be at least 8GB. The disk will be formatted and you’re going to lose all the data that’s stored on them, so make sure that you create a backup before anything else.

After pressing next, you have to choose the USB drive that you want to use for the process. If more than one are connected to your PC, choose the drive you want to use and then click Next again.

At this point, the Media Creation Tool begins the process of downloading Windows 10 October 2018 Update and setting up the bootable drive. Depending on your Internet connection speed, it could take anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours, as a full OS image is downloaded and then transferred to the disk.

Media Creation Tool displays the progress level in its UI during the whole time, and you can continue using your PC normally, but make sure you don’t close the app. When it comes to an end, you should see a message that the process has been completed successfully and the USB drive is ready to use.

It's the best way,  if your going to try to upgrade best to block updates with a firewall or some other way and wait a few months tell they get all the bugs out of the upgrade process. Every version of windows 10 so far  has caused regressions on some systems  . Really it's best to wait to upgrade when they approve it for business to upgrade  . Beta testing stage right now.

Yep, given that Microsoft says that updates are released for Enterprise users only when they're safe, that implies that releases for Home and Pro users are not necessarily safe. And history has confirmed that over and over again to be true.

Windows Insiders releases: Alpha testing phase

Home & Pro releases: Beta testing phase

Enterprise releases: Safe for deployment
