Vista losing out to Windows 7

Microsoft's much-maligned Vista operating system has started to lose market share to its replacement, Windows 7.

Windows 7 has not yet been officially released, but is already making an impact, according to web metrics firm Net Applications, which said that Vista lost 0.2 per cent share during September to end the month with 18.6 per cent of the operating system market.

Windows 7 gained 0.3 per cent, according to Net Applications, representing its biggest monthly gain since Microsoft began making it available to developers and other specialist groups at the beginning of the year.

Even if Microsoft has not yet received any cash for Windows 7, it apparently powered 1.5 per cent of computers that connected to the subset of the internet monitored by Net Applications last month.

Microsoft will release the full version of Windows 7 on 22 October.

However, while Net Applications' figures may represent a bit of good news for Microsoft, it also shows how bad Vista was for the firm.

Vista managed to gain only 19 per cent market share in its entire history. Windows XP, Microsoft's eight-year old operating system, accounted for 71.5 per cent of all operating systems that connected to servers monitored by Net Applications last month.

Windows XP has also been losing ground for two years, but Microsoft still holds 92.8 per cent of the market, according to the figures.

Apple's Mac OS X climbed by nearly 0.25 percentage points over the past month, to end up with a market share of five per cent of all machines monitored by Net Applications.

It won't take long before 7 will overtake Vista after its official release. Vista will be the quickest to fade away, but it will take some time, several years, for 7 to catch up with XP.

Many will switch to 7 when the right time comes.

For now, let's stick to where we're comfortable with.

I've been using Windows 7 for two months now, and if you disable UAC and hand over all permissions to your account everything is great(I hate annoying messages when I want to screw with system files or the like, even when they might protect me from an occasional virus :P).

I'd really advise all of you, especially Vista users(performance wise) but also XP users(user-friendly wise) to upgrade to Windows 7 ;)

I can't argue with this! 7 rocks!

The arrival of Vista make 7 look good.

Imagine there is no Vista......then comparing XP Pro to Win 7.

If Windows Vista's market share is so low MS should be able to refund the money to Vista's users, or offer a rebate when buying W7. LOL

lol thats true.

I remember i got vista for £10 because i bought a new pc near the time when it came out.

Although i wouldn't get win 7 for £10 now anyways but i would like the money back even if it was a £10.

But i think most people will move to Win 7 anyway.

Indeed it seems to be "the great OS"

ANW I read somewhere yesterday that Dell had put up an offer that if you by a Dell laptop now you can ask for a free upgrade to Windows 7. Or similar.

XP has the speed, 7 has the graphic.(using the same hardware)

If one has XP and was offer an upgrade to 7 for $300, would he upgrade? most likely no.

I should show you how to get around that..I am modded like no other...

BUT truth in my assessment.. Glass windows are fine.. I like that has a nice appeal.. though still so much of the OSes are still based on white backgrounds.. The blue trademark color for Microsoft I think needs to be downplayed... and I still think there should be UI changes between Vista/7.. what really I feel should be left up to the user themselves while the company can still target a conservative market as well.. I mean it might sound crazy, but some people don't like what they don't recognize..

Personally I get tired of looking at something that starts to look like 'little tikes' plastic/foam rubber foam toys..the glass upgrade was nice.. and it can be used and modded to look very professional in the right setting... I think the Icons need to mature and grow up.. but you still have to think about the target of the company and the demographic...

My point here is that as far as user interface is concerned in my opinion.. IS solely the decision of the individual using the system..Each one should however reserve the option to fully modify its appearance ... and have that at a minimal cost to system resources..I mean I can do anything the 7 can.. The new windows animations and standard features are a good direction to develop the OS..

So yeah my XP is still sexy when I get done with it...( and I still have performance ) but eventually this will be something that will change.. and yes the programs will come along.. and when I am done with it ..7 will be sexy too...

I am eagerly awaiting an official retail ISO of 7...something coming from a release from the manufacturer after 10.22.09..

I know that I will have fun with it..;) I mean I meant in no way a negative remark.. or downplaying its place in progression..

I will be ...I have to become fluent with the OS.. then I start to change a few things.. Mainly a few operational aspects that seem redundant to me or inefficient ( which is rare )..but relates to my individual use of the OS.. then the big thing which is an appearance to fit my personal style..IF it was a room then I would be a designer.. AND that you just can't build into an OS.. why I said some things just have to be left up to the person.. ( Plus some people you can't please because they don't even know where to begin or what they want .. )

Thanks for the info. Is Windows 7 noticeably slower than XP? Would the upgrade from XP to Windows 7 be worth around $100?

I don't think there is an direct update from XP to 7. And even if it is, it is free. Don't ask me how. ;)

Yeah DKT27 is right there was no direct upgrade from XP to 7.. only from Vista to 7.. Last I heard..I don't know how they would address this, but I am sure something will come about.

Like what everyone say, you can't upgrade to 7.

My advice is to have a clean install even if you have Vista.

For around $100 (cheaper than XP ?), why not...I would purchase one myself after testing Windows 7 for a while.

Hey shit, I have been testing XP Pro then for a few years, just haven't got around to buy it yet, and they came out with 7.:sneaky:

Based on a study by Iolo Technlogies, Windows 7 boot up even slower than Vista.

7 took one minutes 34 seconds and Vista took one minutes 6 seconds from boot-up to a usable stage (ie when the pc starts to idle)

Although 7 boot-up showing the desktops in about 40 seconds, a usable stage is more reliable. (Whatever!):fear:
