The Linux Foundation Defends Microsoft After GitHub Acquisition

“Microsoft is a first-class citizen of the OSS world”

Microsoft’s GitHub takeover has been received with mixed feelings by the developer community, and while many said this is the best way to go for the world’s largest code repository, others rushed to move their projects to alternative services.

One of those who defended Microsoft after the GitHub acquisition is none other than The Linux Foundation. In a statement published on the organization’s blog, executive director Jim Zemlin explains that Microsoft buying GitHub is actually “good news for the world of open source and we should celebrate Microsoft’s smart move.”

Zemlin then goes on to explain that taking over GitHub doesn’t mean that Microsoft buys the entire world of open-source software, noting that all developers whose projects are hosted on this platform retain their ownership of the code.

Furthermore, The Linux Foundation executive director admits that Microsoft is a completely new company these days, and the open-source push is a key part of its strategy.

“Microsoft under the leadership of Satya Nadella has now completed its transition from an adversary of open source to a first-class citizen. If you haven’t noticed, Microsoft has been opening up a ton of code and has been hiring top developers who are deeply engaged in open source,” he writes.

Microsoft to further improve GitHub

Zemlin explains that there’s no reason for the open-source community to be concerned now that Microsoft is buying GitHub, pointing out that the Redmond-based giant’s transition to OSS is a process that started a long time ago.

“This is not a sudden change. Microsoft has become a top contributor to Linux and Kubernetes, they develop and distribute Linux-based products, they open sourced .NET, and they are backers of The Linux Foundation, the Apache Software Foundation, the Open Source Initiative and many similar efforts. Their commitment to open source has been active for years,” Zemlin adds.

The Linux Foundation official ends his post by emphasizing that GitHub is poised to improve under the leadership of Nat Friedman, highlighting that “open source developers changed our world.”

I like how he dismisses "deep mistrust of Microsoft" as if it was all the result of his "poking fun at Microsoft." No one had any valid criticisms it was all just poking fun.

Maybe Microsoft has changed. Maybe it hasn't. But lets not ignore the actual history. The mistrust has real roots. Yes, Microsoft really needs to dig themselves out. Yes, still.

Linux Foundation bought and paid for by Microsoft. Ironic as Jim Zemlin wrote that from his Mac book.

I hate everything about this.

Please note that Microsoft has an extremely influential role in The Linux Foundation. This article is filtered through that position and should be regarded as nothing better than Microsoft propaganda.

These kinds of organizations have no real philosophy, and they reward "flexible" people who just smile and do what the people with the money want so the influence-peddling can go on. They're so "flexible" their management use macbooks

I find this interesting that Jim Zemlin  dont  even use  Open Source Linux  in his PC  when does he use it in a Closed Source Android Phone or does he use Apple Iphone instead? His job is to pet big donator  egos  that buy a seat at the Linux Foundation   so they will keep donating . Microsoft had been planing to buy Github for along time this was not something that  happen over night.  ;)

As far as what Microsoft does with Github  only time will tell,  but there a long way from earning the Linux Community's trust, you cant earn trust from mere words , Actions speak louder than words and Microsoft don't have a very good track record. You're not dealing with just one person and there opinion, you're dealing with millions of people that make open source Linux even posable  without  the Community  all those distros would be dead, if they all decided to use  Windows or Apple instead like Jim Zemlin does hes a trader to say the very least .

Linus Torvalds is the creator, and for a long time, principal developer of the Linux kernel  he uses Open Source Linux  a person that dont use something what they say is meaningless to me when they talk about it  unless there interested in testing it. Because there more likely going to promote the brand they use instead . I'm a long time Windows user and a Linux convert .We all start somewhere  but i never had a desire to use no MAC OS I don't like the way Linux Distros that copy them look .If i talked to Jim Zemlin in DM in private  hes most likely going to tell me to go buy a MAC Book.

Another thing worries me about Microsoft buying  Github there are many projects that have nothing to do with Linux  but the Kodi community and its not so easy for them to find free hosting as it is for Linux if needed .

Linux has nothing to worry about there is plenty of sites like github that would love to have them.
