In a first, an AIDS vaccine shows some success

Scientists and government leaders have already started mapping out how to try to improve the world's first successful AIDS vaccine, which protected one in three people from getting HIV in a large study in Thailand.

That's not good enough for immediate use, researchers say. Yet it is a watershed event in the 26 years since the AIDS virus was discovered. Recent setbacks led many scientists to think a successful vaccine would never be possible.

The World Health Organization and the U.N. agency UNAIDS said the results "instilled new hope" in the field, even though it likely will be years before a vaccine might be widely available.

"This is truly a great moment for world medicine," said Lt. Gen. Eric Schoomaker, the U.S. Army Surgeon General. The Army helped sponsor the study, the world's largest of an AIDS vaccine.

It was the first time scientists tried preventing HIV the same way they treat it — with a combination approach. The study used two vaccines that work in different ways, and that may be one reason the strategy worked, even though neither vaccine did when tested individually in earlier trials, scientists say.

The combo cut the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 31 percent in the study of more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand, researchers announced Thursday in Bangkok.

That benefit is modest, yet "it's the first evidence that we could have a safe and effective preventive vaccine," said Col. Jerome Kim, an Army doctor who helped lead the study.

The outcome "gives me cautious optimism about the possibility of improving this result" and developing a more effective AIDS vaccine, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which co-sponsored the study.

"It's an opening of a new gateway to a road that has brighter lights in it now and maybe some directions," he said. "We need to bring the best minds together and map the way forward."

That has already started. Dozens of researchers, vaccine makers and deep-pocket donors will meet next week in New York "to talk about where we go from here," said Dr. Alan Bernstein, executive director of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise, an alliance of government officials, AIDS scientists, funders such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the WHO. At the meeting will be researchers from the Thai trial, the Army and independent scientists.

Scientists around the world cheered the first taste of victory.

I can't wait for the day when AIDS will become like a regular flu nowadays. Many minor illnesses today were deadly in the past. It's probably a question of how much time till AIDS gets some treatment or vaccine.

You will need to go through of nsaneforums's lot of swearing thread to know why I'm sayin it. Well I cannot explain it again.

I works many times, but it doesn't work great, even TB vaccines are given, but it still happens, there is an explanation to it.

No. Not all. I would say no officially tested vaccines are bad. I talkin about the work they do, there is no life beyond vaccines but they do not work great. Just OK.

warning do not read if you easy get upset. mods edit or delete if you have too.

i dont believe that is ever going to happen. the HIV virus is 2 viruses from 2 different primates that merged. plus there are now 4 main versions of it in the usa. the only way we are going to control and stop this is to be proactive up too killing the people. lucky under socialism of the health care they will be killed off. just like they did to the Hemophilias in france in the 80s with blood with HIV virus.

HIV been shown to been around over 100 years now. eating monkeys and apes spread it to humans. lucky they didnt go far and didnt live long so the HIV didnt spread much. it is believe when they used monkeys for making the small pocs vaccine instead of eggs to make enough quckly that is what spread the virus all over africa.

educate gays, needle users and females equal rights in 3rd world nations. those 3 things would go a long with to slowing the spread of the virus. you can kiss africa and asia countries that are black or muslim controled. its over tor them already. low numbers have it at 25-50% of the pop. the eastern europeans with russia are running bad too. certain islands in the new world are gone too. remember it takes the HIV on avg 10 to 15 years inside a person to be consider AIDs. after AIDs you have around 14 months.

@myidisbb:

I suggest you study the pathophysiology of AIDS :)

Here are some links: 1, 2

The only problem with diseases, is that the human body does not recognize them.

The purpose of a vaccine is to induce cell mediated immunity.

If this can be achieved, goodbye AIDS.

Hope so.. But like AIDS.. in the future there will be some new disease that's not like the flu ..

But yea, hope AIDS will get cured for good.. But the question kinda is if people would like to share it with the people in Africa and other countries

I might sound awfully wrong, though just can not remember the name as hard as I looked for, of a documentary film made by US scientists/docs analysing origins of AIDS (made in mid 80's to mid 90's)

Basically what they've discovered- the most popular aids form (most spread one) comes from having sex with chimps as the virus, whilst in chimps has variations of form between meat/body and within sexual organs... thus have proven myth of eating monkeys not being primarily source of HIV/AIDS

correct me/shoot me if I'm wrong, or find me a link to that documentary :frusty:

this is a well known fact for over years..that HIV most likely came from sexual intercourse with animals specially monkeys..deviant sexual behavior...then faggots nailed each others ass till they spread it world widely ....HIV usually cause no harm in chimps..however its fatal for humans

Just keep your penises inside your pants, practice safe sex, or buy an artificial female device and be happy. Atleast a fake woman won't take you for half your stuff some day. ;)

Oh yea and gays are not at fault for the spread of HIV in my opinion, else all gays would have killed each other by now due to HIV infection. It's the Bi-sexual bastards to blame.

I also have a totally different belief than myidisbb as to why HIV is rampant in poorer countries. The problem is all those cheap condoms that are made in china. Are we supposed to trust a condom made in China, the country with the most overpopulation problems on the planet? Clearly the population problems in China proves their condoms are worthless and should be banned.

Everybody just use Durex quality certified condoms or don't do anything at all  Becoming a monk also helps... you know, being in celibacy and all

And stay away from chimps! I know they're tempting with their big hairy..... hands, but they are very sneaky f*ers.

Thanks! good start, but the actual documentary: I'd love to see it/sow it again...

@ all of those that are tempted by monkeys/chips etc continue to do so!, just avoid contact with humans
