Spotify reveals 2 million free users are dodging ads

Earlier this month, news broke that Spotify was cracking down on users running modded versions of the Spotify app to stream music for free while blocking ads. At the time, it sounded like it was only a few users, but it turns out, the number is a bit higher. Spotify’s IPO filing noted that roughly 2 million users are getting around ads on Spotify without paying, as noted by Reuters.

As of the end of 2017, Spotify reported that it had 157 million active users, of which 86 million were unpaid subscribers. Factor in the 2 million users pirating Premium-esque service by avoiding ads, and that’s roughly 2.3 percent of free Spotify users with modded apps or accounts.

That’s a big deal, as Spotify itself points out in its IPO filing. Free users stealing what amounts to its Premium service without paying for it could increase costs of the free Spotify for the company without providing a corresponding increase to revenue (in either ad views or Premium subscription fees). And unlike most free users — which Spotify counts on to convert to paid customers over time as a key part of its business model — those users with modded versions of the application are less likely to become Premium subscribers.

Even without ad-blocking, if Spotify does become Nazi's with the hacked clients, then just stick to YouTube.

In fact there's alot of tracks/albums that aren't on Spotify which YouTube has...

Well maybe ad-blocking might have to be the 'norm' in the future with YouTube but as it stands, even without ad-blocking, a user can still listen to the chosen track regardless.

There is an option if you root your mobile.

There is a Magisk module that allows you to do that.

There is an Xposed module that blocks all the YT Ads.

Many possibilities ;-)

The most likely scenario is people are sick of ads playing at a 2x-3x volume which is pretty annoying, especially if you're driving and the police sirens and all the other random sounds come on.

NewPipe or NewPipe Beta - Found in F-Droid.

It doesn't support live streams or comments so if you need those then try Vanced - as suggested - or OGYouTube.

If it's only ad blocking you require then try Block This!

While everyone is trying to get an app to listen to their favorite music I have mine always available in my own "cloud."  I create multiple playlists on my NAS and can access it on any device or computer to play my music.  I can add or delete music and modify the playlists at any time.  No ads and no worry about someone blocking me.  The quality  of the music is much better also because they aren't mp3 but flac files.  If you need to expand your music collection you can always do so by creating a music sharing group where members rip their cd/dvd music to flac files and then post them to the group's ftp server.  Members can download whatever they want.  You keep the group small and don't publicize it.  The only requirement is you do have to occasionally buy a dvd, rip it, and upload the files in order to stay a member.  It is actually a very cheap way to get quality music.
