sixoclock
If you are reading this right now, you are online 'almost constantly' too More than a quarter of Americans say they're online 'almost constantly,' new study shows More than one-fourth of Americans are 'almost constantly' online Pew Research Center says this number has risen four percent since 2015 Factors such as race, age and income level affect Americans' internet habits Only eleven percent of Americans claim they still never go online, survey found More than one-fourth of Americans are nearly always online, according to data from Pew Research Center. The think tank has released figures that document Americans' growing online presence. A staggering 26 percent of Americans - up from 21 percent in 2015 - admitted that they are online 'almost constantly'. The research comes at a time when people are expressing fears over children's addictions to mobile devices. The report also said 43 percent of Americans get online several times each day, eight percent go online around once a day. About 11 percent go online multiple times each week, and the same amount claim to never go online. The Pew report said adults who have mobile connections have higher chances of spending a great deal of time online. It claimed 83 percent of people in the US have mobile connectivity - meaning they use a smartphone, mobile device or tablet to access the internet on occasion. Just shy of 90 percent of people who have mobile connectivity are online each day, and about one-third are online almost constantly. The rates for people who who go online but do not have mobile connectivity are drastically lower: 54 percent use the internet daily and only five percent are almost constantly online. Young adults are especially connected with about 40 percent of people ages 18 to 29 almost always online and about 50 percent getting online multiple times each day. This chart reveals the way that factors such as age, race and income shape internet usage This is compared to only eight percent of people 65 and older online almost constantly and just 30 percent getting online multiple times each day. Americans aged 30 to 49 are almost as likely as young adults to use the internet constantly. Since 2015, the percentage of adults 30 to 49 years old who use the internet constantly has risen by 12 points. At the same time, the figure for adults ages 50 to 64 rose five points. Adults who are college educated or who reside in households with relatively high incomes are more likely to use the internet constantly. Additionally, black adults and those who live in non-rural areas have higher chances of always being online. The number of black and Hispanic people who report being constantly online has shot up since 2015 by 14 points and 11 points, respectively. However, there has not been a significant change in the number of white adults who are always online. SOURCE
rasbridge
I must be outside the norm as I do not own a smartphone or use social media (facebook, twitter, snapchat etc.) and have NEVER played a video game. When friends want to talk to me they actually come over for a visit and we talk face-to-face.

luisam
No mystery here. If you have a smartphone it's highly probable that you are most the time "online", even if just passively. You migth get notifications at any time from your email, twittee, whatsApp, instagram, facebook, messenger service, ebay, news service etc... and just touching the screen of your phone, you get online. The statement "Since 2015, the percentage of adults 30 to 49 years old who use the internet constantly has risen by 12 points." is no news. Anyone about 30 now has grown up using computers, console games, cellphones, watching DVD and listening music on an audio player etc. so it's just following the stream. Those who started to use personal computers in the '80s, now are near or over 50. And remember that those who had studied technical or scientific careers since late '60s had some kind of computer programming in their pensum so they had the use of personal computing just a step away. Frequently "Grampa" knows more about computers than his grandson in his 20s.
