Xiaomi's Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus handsets were unveiled in China in December last year; last month, Xiaomi made, the Redmi 5 Plus available in India as the Redmi Note 5, and today, four months after it was originally unveiled, the company has followed through by making the regular Redmi 5 available in the country as well.

Unlike the beefier Redmi Note 5, the Redmi 5 will come with Android 7.1 (Nougat) and sports a 5.7" screen in an 18:9 aspect ratio, with a resolution of 1440 x 720. It also sports a single 12MP rear shooter with a 5MP front-facing one, a micro-USB port, and a dual Nano SIM slot. All of this is powered by a Snapdragon 450 chip and a 3,300mAh battery. As for the RAM and internal storage, there will be three variants of the device based on these specs:

RAM Storage Price
2GB 16GB ₹7,999 ($123)
3GB 32GB ₹8,999 ($138)
4GB 64GB ₹10,999 ($170)

The device will be available at Mi.com and brick-and-mortar Mi Home stores through Xiaomi's flash-sale system, starting at 12pm IST on the 20th of March. The Redmi 5 can also be purchased from Amazon, with a number of offers for buyers, such as an instant cashback of ₹2,200 ($34) from Reliance Jio with 100GB of additional data, and 90% off of a user's first Kindle eBook purchase, up to ₹400 ($3). It's also worth noting that the 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant appears to be exclusive to Amazon for now.

Xiaomi adds that all units sold in India will be manufactured locally.
