nsane.forums
A PhD student in Texas has designed a cardboard computer case that could be going into production and helping to cut computer waste. Brenden Macaluso designed the cardboard case dubbed, "Recompute" as part of his graduate thesis at the University of Houston, and now a technology start-up incubator is looking to market it to major PC manufacturers as part of efforts to cut computer waste. Marc Nathan, head of entrepreneur development at the Houston Technology Center, told the Houston Chronicle that the incubator and Macaluso had been discussing the best way to market the cases. Initially they plan to sell them to hobbyists and environmentally minded computer enthusiasts."He's not just an inventor who came up with something cool, he is a designer who created something through a very specific thought process", Nathan said. "He has thought this through". The case uses the corrugation inside the cardboard to encourage air flow around the PC case to reducer heat build-up. A fan also keeps the interior cool and the motherboard and power supply are separated to minimise heating. The design of the case also minimises the number of parts that are needed to fix it together and take it apart for recycling at the end of its life."We already know that the computer will be thrown out, so I designed an object that does just that", Macaluso said."If we were already reusing cases and replacing hardware (and software) at a mass scale, we would not have nearly the problems that we have now". The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that over 80 per cent of computers in the US end up in landfill and manufacturers are looking for ways to cut this down. HX1
You know I have seen many picture of waste dumps, full of old systems.. I think it is horrible the way these things are shipped off to countries who do not have laws regarding the proper disposal of these products.. and the effect on the environment it has there.. along with the fact that the governments in these countries will not do anything about it because it is profitable to them in these third world environments..I think the reasonable thing to do would be to legally ban such exportation, and leave no loophole...There are so many places that financial should not be the determining factor no matter how badly people fail themselves, country, and institution..One of the reasons I personally believe in building your own system..With the proper considerations..Instead of using it like a disposable razor..Less waste .. and usually more easily customized and changed without large scale impact.. I have also seen desks that can now have the system built inside upgradeable and changeable down to the last detail..I think this is a good alternative idea.. for the average person who cannot build their own system...I don't think it will be the ultimate solution however.. true that paper CAN have less of an effect or impact than the average metal and plastic case..IF its handled properly.. Waste recycling and management still haven't been brought up to the what it needs to be in rural areas and in towns with lower budgets..This makes up quite a large percentage..
