Trapped girls raised alarm on Facebook

The South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) says it is worrying that two girls lost last night in a stormwater drain raised the alert on a social networking site rather than ringing 000.

The 10 and 12-year-old girls updated a Facebook status to say they were lost in a drain on Honeypot Road at Hackham in Adelaide's south.

Glenn Benham from the MFS says it was fortunate a young male friend was online at the time and was able to call for help on their behalf.

"It is a worry for us because it causes a delay on us being able to rescue the girls," he said.

"If they were able to access Facebook from their mobile phones, they could have called 000, so the point being they could have called us directly and we could have got there quicker than relying on someone being online and replying to them and eventually having to call us via 000 anyway."

They are tools for having convenient conversations with multiple people, including multimedia-based discussions

Too bad you need a court order to have them delete your information. The only option you have when leaving them is to deactivate your account which only seems to disable it for you alone because other people can still google you and find your facebook picture etc. Deactivate does not delete your info either because when you reactivate your account everything is there as it was before. I hardly see the point of deactivation if it does nothing. If they really respected your privacy they would let you leave and delete YOUR information but apparently they own you and your information once you join so tough luck being a prisoner.

I also have joined it... don't care much about the conspiracy theories that the CIA are using it to do god knows what to you. I'm a member of Orkut and Facebook, I have Gmail and Youtube account, and I use Chrome. The evil internet knows already everything there is to know about me :fist: And by internet, I mean ze Google B) And of course the CIA.

PS If I had the second chance, I wouldn't join FB. But oh well, I'm screwed anyway..

@DKT27:

It's not my problem if other people put their personal info on the web.

One good practice I know is that I don't put any of mine.
