Recently, Western media were actively discussing the alarming news for the Pentagon: Russia was the first in the world to successfully test a hypersonic sea-launched missile 3M22 "Zircon", which will soon be used by the Russian lot. And the main thing is that the presence of such missiles immediately makes the existence of ship protection - artillery systems and air defense systems - meaningless, which drastically reduces the effectiveness of carrier-based strike groups, which are the main combat unit, the main argument and indicator of the strength of the US Navy.

According to the American The Washington Times, the new Russian development represents a quantum leap in the creation of an asymmetric weapon that can protect against a nuclear attack. Against this background, the newspaper believes, the US missile defense system looks obsolete.

While there is little information about the new Russian rocket. Data about it is classified. However, in 2011 representatives of the Central Institute of Aviation Motors (near Moscow Lytkarino) at the MAKS airshow showed mock-ups of missiles called hypersonic vehicles. They had a strange shape - faceted body with a flattened fairing, reminiscent of the muzzle of the Australian platypus. (By the way, the Indian company Brahmos also announced the work on hypersonic devices, demonstrating the layout of the same "platypus".) Just then, for the first time, the name Zirkon, which stirred up the military all over the world, was voiced. That is, work on "Zircon" was conducted from 2010-2011.

From materials of open sources it is known that the length of the rocket is not more than 10 m, the range of flight is 350-500 km. Tests began in March 2016. And this year, during the last April launches that made so much noise in the West, the Zircon rocket flew at a speed of 9800 km per hour - 8 times faster than the sound, which practically leaves no chance for the enemy's air defense to intercept it and destruction. That is why Zirkon will become the main trump card of the Russian Navy in the very near future in the confrontation with the American carrier-based strike groups (AOG).

A major advantage of this missile is not only its tremendous speed, but also unification. It is important that Zircon will be able to start from the same launchers, from which the Caliber cruise missiles were launched, and anti-ship missiles - Onyx.

The difference in approaches in the creation of sea rockets

For many years, the myth of invulnerability for anti-ship missiles of American surface ships - destroyers and aircraft carriers - was maintained and replicated in the world. But a few years ago, these myths began to collapse - the fault was the Russian developers who created missiles, which became a huge headache for foreign designers of ship protection systems.

The scientific schools in the West and in Russia were absolutely different in approaching the creation of these weapons. With a few exceptions, all foreign missiles were created as subsonic. Their main advantage was a small size, and accordingly, a massive, relatively cheap production. As a result, a whole swarm of such missiles was sent to the designated target.

Domestic developers went on the way to create heavier rockets, defending the concept: "One missile is one ship". And here it is necessary to consider, for what purposes they were created. For our main object of destruction were to become AAG ships and so-called intractable targets. That is why our missiles were much larger than Western analogues - weighed about six to seven tons - but they exceeded them in many parameters, including speed characteristics. They had good noise immunity - resistance against the EW assets of the enemy, since it was easier to stuff a large rocket with various electronic means.

As a rule, already at a distance of up to 100 km, they could take the target for escort, having calculated the main in the march, and on the final flight trajectory destroy the enemy for sure.

"Granites" and "Onyxes"

Today, the main missile weapons of the Russian Navy are anti-ship missiles P-700 Granit (according to NATO classification - Shipwreck, "Shipwreck"), created back in the 70's.

At that time they had almost unique characteristics, they could start from surface ships, and from submarines, including from underwater position.

The missile is considered to be of great weight: the missile weighs seven tons in its outfitted condition. But the rocket "Granite" has a wide altitude range. Within a radius of 150-200 km, they are able to fly at the lowest altitudes. In other conditions, they can climb 15-17 km and, having crossed the main section of the road at these heights, go straight from there to the destination.

Moreover, the warhead of the missile can have both an explosive-penetrating charge weighing up to 750 kg, and a nuclear one - with a power of up to 500 kilotons. Just like nuclear strategic missiles, the P-700 can shoot false targets, use generators of active jamming, misleading the enemy's air defense. Their new samples with the help of artificial intelligence can exchange information during the flight, adjusting the targets depending on the changing combat situation.

A more modern anti-ship missile, which is in service with the Russian army and navy, is the P-800 Onyx. It is equipped with the famous coastal missile system "Bastion", as well as small missile ships, which allows them to fight on an equal footing with large operational shipborne groupings of the enemy.

The combat part of Onyx weighs 700 kg, which, according to experts, is guaranteed to cause irreparable damage to a large ship, including an aircraft carrier. And if the Onyx launches are made simultaneously from several points, then any large sea unit will be sunk with 100% probability.

The successor of Soviet missiles

And now the "Caliber" and "Onyxam" are replaced by the new hypersonic missile system 3M22 "Zircon". With the adoption of it into service, the situation at sea is changing in principle. The existence of naval artillery systems, ship's air defense systems of the enemy in general, lose any sense, since the speed of the new missile is such that, as experts say, it is beyond the boundary of operational impact.

And the worst thing for a potential adversary is the fact that it is not only large ships such as the cruiser that are planned to equip the "Zirkons" by 2018-2020, but also smaller ones. And this means that the presence of the Russian Navy "Zirkons" dramatically reduces the effectiveness of American aircraft carriers.

This applies to even the most modern aircraft carriers such as "Gerald Ford" and their escort ships. Even their defense system, which for a long time was considered impenetrable, can not withstand the new Russian hypersonic missiles.

Armed with "Zircons" are planned nuclear submarines of the fifth generation "Husky" and nuclear submarines of Project 885M "Yasen-M". They will be included in the ammunition of heavy nuclear missile cruisers Admiral Nakhimov and Peter the Great. During the planned modernization on the only Russian aircraft carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov, launchers for the Zircon missiles will also be deployed.

Moreover, according to experts, Zirkon is a target for a potential adversary, and it will not be possible to cope with it not only with the means of air defense that are in the hands of the probable enemy, but also promising ones, work on which is only under way. Foreign developers are already in a hurry to take emergency measures, reviewing the schemes and principles for deploying anti-aircraft weapons on ships. But, judging by everything, in the next 12-15 years nothing new that could have a real counteraction to the Russian "Zirkons" has been invented in the world. ■

Russia is always one step ahead of others in the defense sector. Another thing is that they actually may have gone a few steps more than what is made public.

not all countries are number #1 in Every military aspect. take U.S for example, they only boast about their air attacks, that's why the have so many aircraft carriers. on the ground force they aren't that good neither are they on missile defense or missile attacks. maybe Russia is not the #1 in the world for air campaigns and attacks (i.e superiority) but they sure are good at anti-air defense, anti-air in whole be it cruise/balistic missiles, F-22 raptor or F-35s. and unstoppable missiles like Satan 1 and 2. they focus and put the military budget on other parts, but U.S chose to put it on air superiority.
