Xbox 360 is statistically least reliable console

According to research carried out by warranty provider SquareTrade, almost a quarter of Microsoft's Xbox 360s fail within two years, leaving it behind the PS3, and the console which proved to be most reliable: the Nintendo Wii. The research was carried out on 16,000 consoles, and all of those were brand new. In addition, failures which were due to accidents were not included.

According to the report, the Xbox 360 has a failure rate of 23.7%, over a time span of two years. The PS3 has a failure rate of 10% over two years, but the Wii beats all of them with a considerably smaller 2.7% failure rate. But even when the usage of each console was considered (as it is reported that Wii users use their console half as much as Xbox 360 and PS3 users do), the Wii still remained at the top, and the Xbox 360 remained in third place.

Unsurprisingly, the ‘red ring of death' issue accounted for 12% of Xbox 360 failures over two years, with the remaining 11.7% being caused by other problems, such as disk reading and display issues. As for the other consoles, disk reading was the biggest issue reported for the Playstation 3, with power failures being the biggest issue for the Wii.

Naturally, the report isn't 100% accurate because some Xbox 360 users would have gone straight to Microsoft when they had issues with their consoles. However, for those who want all the juicy statistics, check out the report here.

I wonder when Microsoft plans to move to 45nm cpu and gpu. That should help with the heat issue that leads to the majority of failures.

Now that the PS3 is about £230 here in UK, it's a no brainer to choose it over the Xbox 360! :dance2:

Unless:

You are a Halo/others fan

You hate the PS3 controller (it really is that bad!)

actually i had a 360 for two years now

i really thought the moment i bought it , it wouldn't be more than two years for the PS3 to Lead the way

BluRay wins it at the end

the only annoying thing to me , The games of Ps3 aren't cracked !!

i like MS becoz we can have their Games cracked :D

PC only for me. Forgettin all you get on the console, PC can play all of the games of the consoles by an emulator.

This is true, my xbox 360 controller fits my hands better than the PS3 controller. Still don't own a 360 as yet but luckily Microsoft had the common sense to make the 360 controller work with windows gaming platforms too so I use it on my PC and I pretend I own a 360 when I play games. :D

Not all, not by a longshot. Probably in 10 years time there will be an xbox 360 emulator for PC and 20 years time a PC will have an emulator for PS3 games. Less time for the 360 because it only uses 3 "simple" dual cores whereas the PS3 uses 1 "simple" dual core and 7 other complex cores. (I think I have that right ).

The difference between PC games and console games is PC uses buffers on the large video card memory to store frames in large amounts, pre processed data if you will; whereas a console like ps3/x360 renders the graphics in real time which is why they only have so little video memory on the whole. The good thing is most game titles are also released for PC but for the legendary titles like god of war, gran turismo, fable, halo, etc then you need to get the appropriate console.
