Batu69
Windows 10 is infamous for having snooping baked in, but one government stood up for user privacy. Oh, the irony! Because Windows doesn’t make much money for Microsoft these days, the company decided, beginning in Windows 10, that snooping on users à la Google and Facebook could be profitable. But one country said enough was enough. It would stand up for its users’ “privacy.” That country? The People’s Republic of China. Cough. Didn’t see that one coming, did you? Well, I say “privacy” because China is infamous for tracking its computer users and censoring the internet with the Great Firewall of China. But just because the powers that be in Beijing want to know every move their citizens make doesn’t mean they want Microsoft joining in on the spying. So China gave Microsoft a choice: Rip out its snoopware, or forget about selling Windows 10 to government or enterprise customers. Microsoft, never known for turning down a dollar or a yuan, caved. Beginning a year ago, Microsoft started developing a Chinese government-approved version of Windows 10 in partnership with the Chinese technology and defense company China Electronics Technology Group Corp (CETC). On May 23, Windows 10 China Government Edition was released. This version complies with Chinese governmental privacy and security standards. As Orangutan Capital noted, “this version strips telemetry and data collection from Windows; thus, in a bit of irony, the Chinese Government-mandated edition is the only version of Windows since XP (or Windows 7 before updates/patches) that respects the privacy rights of its users and is not, as of today, a data-collection machine.” This is hilarious. Well, in a dark, hideously unfunny way. Microsoft has gone along with this because, while China has a huge number of Windows users, Microsoft makes barely a dime from them. Software piracy runs rampant in China. Of course, just because Microsoft isn’t snooping doesn’t mean China hasn’t had Microsoft build in the government’s own spyware. When Microsoft talks up the changes it made in the China Government Edition to satisfy Beijing, it begs the question: Why wouldn’t everyone want what China is getting? Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s executive vice president of Windows and devices, blogged, “The Windows 10 China Government Edition is based on Windows 10 Enterprise Edition, which already includes many of the security, identity, deployment, and manageability features governments and enterprises need. The China Government Edition will use these manageability features to remove features that are not needed by Chinese government employees like OneDrive, to manage all telemetry and updates, and to enable the government to use its own encryption algorithms within its computer systems.” Meanwhile, back in the United States, Microsoft has kind of, sort of kept its promise to make Windows 10 Creators Update a bit more private. Really, though, all it has done is to make its privacy settings on the PC a trifle more helpful and transparent. If you really want a private desktop operating system, Linux remains your only real choice. If you’re hoping the U.S. government might stand up for user privacy, I can only take it you haven’t seen how President Trump and his confederates are destroying net neutrality and internet privacy at the same time. These are the same people who want to let your ISPs watch your every move on the internet. Of course, you could try to get a copy of Windows 10 China Government Edition. That way you’d only need to worry about China instead of Microsoft riding with you as you do your daily work. Decisions, decisions! steven36
I think ill just keep what me have for the time being dual booting Linux with windows 8.1 and block telemetry and Microsoft ips with my firewall , If you use this version then you would have try too block China government IPs out . That's like asking who would I rather have spying on me, the NSA or Microsoft ? LOL ! Windows 10 not very much different than Windows 8.1 as far as privacy because of update rollups but I'm not interested in having too reinstall all my Windows programs every 6 months to beta test a new version of windows 10 to get all the bugs out so businesses can update 3-6 mths latter after the consumer has tested . Windows 8.1 is stable .

Windows 8.1 is stable . Totally agree with you. Using both 7 and 8.1 but ignoring the updates since June 2015 and just using a good firewall and SRP. Microsoft is the only company that has a million beta testers that work for free and get crap in return. Be nice if there was some deal we could work out with all those beta testers that would increase our wealth. Something similar to what I told a friend the other day when he mentioned he won $4 on a $20 scratch-off card. I told him I would save him the trouble of scratching it off, just give me $20 and for every $20 you give me I will give you $4.
steven36
Most the time I just come on Windows in the evening and come here and other sites that post software updates and do them then I boot back to into Linux tell the next evening. . I can do most things I like too do on Linux like listen to music , watch and stream videos and i have 2 download mangers as well. Windows is not really something I have too have anymore .. I have it mostly for audio and Video editing and if I really wanted too i could turn my other PC on with windows 7 and do this that i have across from me and never use the internet in windows or turn off Linux, If it were not for a problem I had with Windows 10 in 2015 i would never tried Linux . So thanks Windows 10 for being buggy !

steven36
Quote Ni Guangnan: China should suspend purchases and use of Windows 10 China Government Edition pending security review (translation) June 12, 2017 by Graham Webster (Chinese original follows / 中文在后) See also related items: 核心安全审查专家回应Windows10政府版被建议禁用:现阶段强行切换系统并非最佳选择, 倪光南炮轰Win10政府版没过审查 微软合作方回应 * * * The Government Should Suspend Purchase and Use of Windows 10 Government Edition By Ni Guangnan Southern Metropolis Daily, June 8, 2017, Page: AA15 A few days ago, Microsoft Greater China CEO Alain Crozier said the China Government Edition of Windows 10, produced according to the “secure and controllable” principle, had already undergone user testing at three major enterprises, proving that it is reliably secure and thus ready for wide deployment. Reports followed saying “Windows 10 Government Edition Has Completed Domestic Security Testing.” People should ask: Why are they making a big deal out of Windows 10 passing “user testing” and “security testing”? As everyone knows, China’s Cybersecurity Law has officially gone into effect. It requires: “Critical information infrastructure operators purchasing network products and services that might impact national security shall undergo a national security review organized by the State cybersecurity and Informatization departments and relevant departments of the State Council.” In contrast to this regulation, it’s not difficult to see that claiming Windows 10 passed “user testing” or “security testing” is probably designed to give create the false impression that Windows 10 Government Edition has already passed “national security review,” in order to open the door to government procurement. According to the Security Review Measures for Network Products and Services issued by the Cyberspace Administration of China, cybersecurity review has strict procedures, for instance requiring third-party evaluation by a nationally recognized cybersecurity review organization. In 2015, before the establishment of the joint venture between China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) and Microsoft, Microsoft issued Windows 10 Government Edition. At that point, the Security Review Measures for Network Products and Services were being drafted, and on related aspects Windows 10 Government Edition underwent a round of cybersecurity review and did not pass. Since then, Windows 10 Government Edition has never again undergone this kind of review. No matter what kind of “user testing” or “security testing” it later went through, therefore, it still has not passed cybersecurity review. Experts specifically point out that Windows 10 has subjectively and objectively not passed cybersecurity review, because: (1) Although China does not lack operating system experts, because Windows is closed-source, proprietary software, no expert outside Microsoft can be fully familiar with it. It is not realistic, then, to rely on a few experts not fully familiar with Windows to accurately estimate the security and controllability of Windows 10 Government Edition with only a short period in which to examine 100 million lines of source code. (2) Undertaking security review of software at minimum requires access to the software’s refactorable (可重构的) and complete source code, but Microsoft has never provided China with Windows’ complete source code, let alone allowed it to refactor. If a piece of software has millions of lines of non-open source code, it is like a black box, and there is fundamentally no way to accurately estimate its security and controllability. Today, no substantive change has resulted from experts making the above points. Even if Windows 10 Government Edition again undergoes cybersecurity review, the degree of difficulty will not decrease. Furthermore, because the structure of Windows 10 incorporates trustworthy computing, reviewing it requires verifying that it complies with the Electric Signature Law (电子签名法) and the Provisions on the Administration of the Use of Commercial Encryption Products (商用密码管理条例). Additionally, it requires surveying how domestic and international information security firms integrate trustworthy computing and antivirus software with Windows 10 and deal with the issue of unfair competition. Clearly Windows 10 Government Edition must again undergo cybersecurity review in what will be a protracted process. In 2005 and 2014, because Windows Vista and Windows 8 were not controllable, the government ordered a halt of purchases. In 2015, Microsoft quickly updated editions and released Windows 10. Several authoritative Chinese security evaluation organizations concluded that, “the Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 kernel are basically the same, there were not more substantial changes, and to a great extent the upgrade was for the sake of commercial publicity.” (This evaluation only determined whether the two editions were the same and did not touch upon security and controllability estimation, and so it was relatively easy to complete.) In conclusion, seeing that Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 10 Government Edition have not passed cybersecurity review, relevant issues will hopefully be given attention, and government procurement and use of Windows 10 (including Windows 10 Government edition) should be prohibited according to law. As early as CETC (China Electronics Technology Group) and Microsoft's joint venture before the establishment of Microsoft to make a "Win10 government versionAt that time, "network products and services security review approach" is being developed, the relevant aspects of the "Win10 Government Edition" conducted a network security review, the results did not pass. Since then, the "Win10 government version" and did not do such a review. therefore,No matter what it did later, "user test", "security test", it is still a product that does not pass the network security review Ni Guangnan said, in view of Win10 equivalent to Win8 and "Win10 government version" did not pass the network security review, hope that the parties concerned to be concerned, should continue to prohibit government procurement and use Win10 (including "Win10 government version"). http://www.fonow.com/view/188962.html
