[Windows 10 Pro] Repair Install

Hello peeps.

I downloaded the latest Windows 10 Pro build and I am currently burning it to disk.

I need to do a repair install and see it's a case of running from the disk.

Can I install a newer build rather than my older build to do a repair install, or should I use the original disk (build)?

Thanks for the input.

You can repair Windows 10 from Redstone 1 to Redstone 3, the repair tool works the same regardless of the build. You can do an upgrade, but I personally don't recommend it, left over files will make a mess of your hard drive. Best option if you can boot to Windows is to backup data and do a clean install.

Here are the common Windows command options to repair a failed boot drive. Once you boot to the Windows 10 disc, click  Repair your computer on the lower-left corner, then Click Troubleshoot, then Click Advanced options and then Click Command Prompt.

FixMbr option when you need to repair Master Boot Record corruption problems, or when you need to clean the code from the MBR. This command will not overwrite the existing partition table in the hard drive.

Bootrec /fixMbr
FixBoot option when the boot sector was replaced with another non-standard code, the boot sector is damaged, or when you installed an early version of the operating system alongside another more recent version.

Bootrec /fixBoot
ScanOS option when the Boot Manager menu doesn’t list all the operating systems installed on your computer. This option will scan all drives to find all compatible installations and it will display the entries that are not in the BCD store.

Bootrec /ScanOS
RebuildBcd option when you don’t have another option and you must rebuild the BCD (Boot Configuration Data) store.

Bootrec /RebuildBcd

If the above repair option fails and it most likely will -- Windows repair tool doesn't do a lot. Your next option would to repartition your current Windows disk to a "C" and "D", where C is Windows current and D will be a new install. This way you can reinstall Windows 10 and get access to your data,

Hope this helps.

Did a repair install for my laptop, (ran the iso from the hdd), to the version before the creators version with the creators iso

It more or less said it would keep nothing but it did leave untouched all non windows folders I had made on my C:\ partition root and didn't touch my D:\ partition.

It a quad core laptop with single SSD,, took maybe 40 minutes.  Before I did that,  I had used dism /online /export-driver /destination:D:\DriverBU to back up non windows drivers which came in handy to fix up device manager missing driver errors quickly so it apparently didn't keep any installed bits and pieced to any of the windows system folders.

After I think two of the more popular fixes there are only one remaining event log warning, an error 360;   Windows Hello for Business provisioning will not be launched. Device is AAD joined ( AADJ or DJ++ ): Not Tested (win10 Enterprise)

Just an update.

I of course removed RollBackRX Pro a secondary backup source.

I did this before startup.

Then ran the install via a DvD disk from my desktop and installed like a dream.

System is faster and it sorted out minor issues and made sure HomeGroup works, one of the main reasons for why I did an upgrade.

However, gadgets had to be uninstalled and reinstalled and my Alcohol 120% is having problems creating virtual drives.

I am sure if no-one knows how to fix this I am sure I will find a fix.

Edit/ I do however have a large Windows.old folder in Windows file, will remove that in the future.

Further edit/ I sorted out the alcohol 120% problem by installing the free one first, then uninstalling it with Revo Uninstaller then installing 120% it fixed the problem above.
