The UWP version of File Explorer

Microsoft has already confirmed a universal app version of File Explorer, and even though this was expected to launch with the Creators Update in April, the new file manager was nowhere to be seen when the company pushed the go-ahead button for the new OS update.

And yet, it appears that the new File Explorer version is actually there, only that it’s not directly available for users who install the Windows 10 Creators Update.

In fact, Microsoft hasn’t made it widely available in Windows 10 for a good reason: the UWP version of the File Explorer is not ready just yet, so the existing implementation is still work in progress. This means Microsoft is still developing the app and it should be released in the coming months, most likely with the Redstone 3 update to launch in September.

How to enable the UWP File Explorer

Fortunately, launching the new File Explorer for Windows 10 Creators Update or later is not rocket science, and all it takes is a simple trick that involves creating a new shortcut with a special target.

So what you need to do is to right-click the desktop, create a new shortcut, and in the location box, enter the following path:

explorer shell:AppsFolder\c5e2524a-ea46-4f67-841f-6a9465d9d515_cw5n1h2txyewy!App

Click Next and then complete the setup process, and when double-clicking the shortcut to launch it you should be able to see the new File Explorer and not the Win32 version that’s been around for so long.

This new version of the file manager is also optimized for touch and it’s already available on Windows 10 Mobile devices with the same look and features.

It remains to be seen when Microsoft makes the new File Explorer available for everyone, but in the meantime keep in mind that this is still work in progress and certain bugs might still be experienced because of that.

I sometimes think that the only thing the management @MS thinks is:

--- can we make it uglier?

--- can we make it flatter?

--- can we make it as simple as it gets so tablet/phone users can use our desktop OS?

--- can we we ignore all the feedback from the desktop users?

P.S. No wonder they have released it silently.... this is by FAR the worst file manager I have ever seen/experienced...

I second everything PrEzi said... and WHERE are our multiple tabs functionality?  Why release THIS when you can release what's slated for Redstone 3???

You are absolutely right.

If you want a better one : Immersive Explorer

The last update is one year old though… I wonder if it's still developed.

Want to know which side is the most clueless of it all?!...

Well... I tested Creators Update for almost a month... Almost absolutely nothing has changed since I was an Insider in pre-release times of RTM-BETA1... That is, it is still far from being used in everyday life...

On the other hand, I have a Lumia 550 with the same Creators Update installed... Everything works as expected.

Answer to what I asked at the beginning:
What should be left aside is alive and what deserves attention has been left to the moths...

Satya Nadella's vision...

Hopefully they make this an option when it launches. Currently it is terrible. The traditional is way more organized and easier to use IMO.

That's one of the problems with "The last version of Windows ever"... anything and everything is up for change.

Earlier versions of Windows were static, the look and feel didn't change from installation day. With Windows 10 it seems every update changes the look and feel of something.

No way to avoid the changes either, unless you (1) turn off updates forever, or (2) learn to live with what you dislike, or (3) upgrade to Windows 7 or 8.1.

Fortunately there usually are better third-party applications to replace the ever-changing MS "apps". FWIW, XYplorer is my favourite File Explorer replacement. Heck, it may even be so good that it's on the nsane front page :)

Misaki2010

This was in Windows since a long time... (a few months), you guys should STOP posting articles from Softpedia. They are misinformed and bad... just a pathetic excuse for a news website!

Windows 10 is a poorly made copy of KDE Plasma and Linux as a whole...

Microsoft just don't care what are they making. It only needs to be new. They don't care even if it is less advanced than the previous version. With time things are supposed to be updated, and Microsoft does just that.

I meant Windows 10, not that new universal file explorer app... ;)

Or you misunderstood what I said or Windows 10 is losing an honorable user... :dunno::whistle:

What has ever been pretty about windows  expect for Windows Aero witch has been around since Vista  and was made with the help of stardock devs? windows 8.1  I  added  a different   theme, A 3rd party start menu with a skin that matches my theme and cracked  Areo glass  and I use clover on the default file manger now it looks half way decent .   Theme patchers , Windows blinds ,etc have existed since the days of XP  too make windows look better if  it were not closed source you could simply change it and now with Windows 10 they break any work arounds  they have on upgrades . The abuse people deal with just too say they use the newest . The problem with Windows is if they really change something  you can never change it back ,You can use 3rd party software  to change it but it's still won't be the same as it was. :)

I like XYplorer too  as well if it were not for some 3rd party softwares even games that a type of software there be no need for windows at all and I find myself booting into Windows less and less everyday I boot into long enough too keep things updated I dont need it for what little I do on the internet  very often.
