At least nine people have been killed in a blast on the underground rail system in St Petersburg, anti-terror officials have said.

Reuters said an emergency service source has told them there was one blast that took place between two stations.

Earlier it was reported that two blasts had occurred and ten people had died.

Russia's Anti-Terrorism Committee has now said that nine people died and 20 have been injured.

The St Petersburg underground railway said in a statement: "An unidentified object supposedly blew up in a (train) carriage."

Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee said security will be tightened at all critical transport facilities.
