Windows 10 Will Force Some Updates on Users No Matter Their Internet Connection

One of the biggest annoyances with the original version of Windows 10 was that PCs were provided with system updates regardless of their Internet connections, bringing many users close to exceeding their data plans or even causing huge charges for those relying on cellular connectivity.

An option that allowed users to mark connections as metered was introduced to make sure that updates are only downloaded via broadband or Wi-Fi, but now it seems like Microsoft misses being criticized and makes another change that could annoy some Windows 10 adopters.

The upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update will change how the metered connection switch works, as the operating system will receive essential updates even if this option is enabled.

As WinSuperSite noted, there’s a new tip in the Windows Update page of the latest Windows 10 build which explains how updates will be delivered to PCs over metered connections in the Creators Update.

“We’ll automatically download and install updates, except on metered connections (where changes may apply). In that case, we’ll automatically download only those updates required to keep Windows running smoothly,” Microsoft explains without actually providing any specifics on what “updates required to keep Windows running smoothly” means.

Coming in the Creators Update for everyone

Most likely, Microsoft will ship security updates and critical patches for Windows 10 to all systems regardless of whether they’re using a Wi-Fi or metered connection in an attempt to at least patch all vulnerabilities that would expose these systems. The rest of the updates would be delivered once a broadband or fast connection is available.

The change will be officially introduced in Windows 10 Creators Update due next month, so users should have this in mind when installing the new OS version, especially if they rely on metered connections to browse the web.

We’re still waiting for Microsoft to detail these essential updates that would be shipped to Windows 10 no matter what, and hopefully more information would be provided before the April 11 rumored launch date of the new OS release.

Way to go Microsoft!!! Just when we thought you had finally come to your senses and were giving users ways to avoid or delay the flaky, bug ridden, zero QA, forced updates, you revert to the same idiotic update strategy you started with this mess that is Windows 10.

 

What makes you think that your security updates are any less system borking?

Hope M$ won't block update options in Group policy editor. Only option to survive. One pop-up every time I switch on computer also happens in between gaming or working, but it doesn't waste data. Blocks download. Hope they will not alter Gpedit options.

Unfortunately they have a history of removing and/or ignoring GP settings if too many pesky users^* use them.

 

About the only sure way to stop Microsoft inflicting their buggy updates is to disable the Windows Update service, and only re-enable it (temporarily) when the updates (eventually) become safe.AskWoody (Woody Leonhard) will keep you safe.

 

^* pesky users = those who believe that Microsoft shouldn't have carte blanche control of users' OS.
