New Microsoft Security Essentials, KB 3205972, fixes right-click scan bug

Tests show 4.10.209.0 brings back the 'Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials' option in context menus

Those of you who use Microsoft Security Essentials to protect your Win7 machines (I do) were greeted with a new patch this morning.

 

As best as I can tell, KB 3205972 is completely undocumented -- it doesn’t appear on the official Windows Update list. There is no KB article.

 

And clicking on the “More information” link in Windows Update delivers an unhelpful picture of a family baking cookies with a non-Microsoft PC, inviting you to Shop Windows 10.

 

 

In my tests overnight, I was delighted to see that this latest version, 4.10.209.0, fixes a bug that was introduced two months ago in the previous version, 4.10.205.0 (which arrived in KB 3193414). That bug removed the “Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials …” entry from the right-click context menu on files and folders. Right-click “Scan with MSE” was present in 4.9.218.0, but it disappeared in September with 4.10.205.0. Now it’s back with 4.10.209.0.

 

I have no idea what, if anything, this latest version does, other than fix that bug.

 

Microsoft never did document the Sept. 28 patch that introduced the bug, KB 3193414. It hasn’t yet documented the new patch, KB 3205972, which fixes the bug. Do you detect a pattern here?

 

The last patch brought a wave of paranoia -- folks are somehow reticent about installing undocumented patches to their antivirus software. This time, at least we all know we’re in the same boat.
