Internet Pirates More Likely to Pay Than Law-Abiding Counterparts

File-sharers are often portrayed as destroyers of the creative industries but new research suggests that isn't the case. According to the survey, 60% of music pirates also buy music, a figure that drops to 44% among non-sharers. Movie pirates continue the trend by being much more likely to pay than their law-abiding counterparts.

Each year, The Internet Foundation In Sweden (IIS) produces a report titled ‘Swedes and the Internet.’ As its name suggests, the report aims to shine light on how people behave online.

Covering issues from social media to smartphones, gambling, and of course, content consumption and file-sharing, the survey of 3,000 citizens aged 11-years-old and up has provided interesting insights in previous years. 2016 is no different.

“We continue to use the Internet to listen to music and watch movies. Eight out of ten listen to music and just over six out of ten watch movies. This is most popular among the young where almost everyone is doing it,” the report reads.

“Youtube is the most popular site for all ages. It begins in the pre-school years and almost all four-year-olds are using Youtube, but also the oldest are frequent users.

“With the arrival of streaming services more have begun to pay for music and film, but nevertheless file-sharing remains around 20 percent of the population, which it has done for almost ten years.”

But while the survey indicates that peer-to-peer file-sharing has remained static, other areas of unauthorized content consumption have been on the increase. Notably, web-based streaming services are gaining traction, particularly among lower age groups.

But of course, people obtaining content for free is only part of the puzzle. People paying for official online services has been on the increase since their inception. In 2011, for example, 15% of the population streamed music. That had increased to 38%, 42% and 44% in 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively.

In 2015, after a late start for video, 28% were subscribing to a Netflix-like service and this year that figure reached 38%. Roughly speaking, four-out-of-ten now pay for a music or video streaming service but it is the young (and traditionally the most likely to pirate) who are the most enthusiastic customers.

In fact, IIS says that those who engage in illegal file-sharing and unauthorized streaming are also more likely to pay.

“File-sharers previously bought at least as many CDs as those who do not file-share and today we can see that it is more common for file-sharers to subscribe to streaming services for music and movies than those who do not,” the organization explains.

“60 percent of file-sharers pay for music streaming services, compared with 39 percent of those who do not share files and 44 percent of the population.

“The ratio is similar for those who use the sites where you can download movies for free. 53 percent of those pay for a Netflix-like streaming service, compared with 34 percent of those who are not downloading movies for free,” IIS notes.

The figures are an improvement on those reported in last year’s survey.

In 2015, 58% of music pirates put their hands in their pockets to pay versus just 39% of non-filesharers. The figures for the movie sector were 46% and 24% respectively.

Internet Pirates are more likely to see or hear  these things than non pirates to began  witch may or may not lead to them buy it. Most people I know who dont file share only buy the bare minimum .   Filesharers are more likely to buy Netflix  because they are depended  on having these things were non-filesharers just watch TV  are use a free service .

But none of this research matters to mpaa or riaa no ways the whole reason legal streaming was invented was not to convince non-filesharers to begin with regardless if they buy or not there 100% legal  and Hollywood done  better before there was such thing as fileshareing or the internet . It was to convince filesharers to use legal means .

Only there's a few problems with this 40% to 60% of people dont have the money or even fast enough internet to use Netflix  or buy entertainment and Hollywood want be happy tell everyone stops doing it and it's 100% profit for them.

I fall into that  40% to 60% bracket where I got better things to do than give my money to Hollywood  and before i buy there crap i would just watch TV or listen to the radio . But since its there for free why not take advantage of it?. I lived more of my life without the internet than with it and i got along just fine watching TV and listening to the Radio before  lol..

Where my daughter lives, their cable company is installing new fiber optic cables and are offering basic cable with internet for $65 a month and the internet will be 250Mbps.  That's 2 1/2 times faster than the previous high speed access at half the price.  I have seen a lot of 'poor' families living in what is called the poverty level and every member of the household has a smart phone, they have a computer and they have internet access with netflix, cableTV, and all the other goodies too.  So they are getting the money from somewhere to have all those services.

I was texting (though at the time it was called talking) to friends on the other side of the globe in 1968 using a microwave dish and a teletype keyboard. DARPANET was just an upgrade to that system and instead of seeing what was typed on paper it had a screen.  I became use to having those tools long before many others even had a clue anything like that existed.  Everything else has just been an update of the system capabilities that I, like many others, have come to think of as a basic part of life.  I never was much of a movie goer or tv watcher and had music on reel to reel tape that was recorded off records and we shared/copied tapes.  Piracy is nothing new, it has existed since at least 1965, but no one cared to say anything about it back then.

I was using  2 way radios  talking too all around the world  in the 80s and 90s i was not alive in 1968  2 way radios  was the prehistoric internet  people used before anyone even cared about  the internet the only places you seen computers around here was schools and maybe a place of business . I come from a place were most  people really worked for a living with there hands . I been running and setting up machines since i was 19 years old .  No body cared about texting and most people  around here never never talked to people overseas unless they had family over there witch i did serving in the military and we did it on the landline.

So telling me you worked behind a computer  all you're life dont impress me much because i use to help make parts that went in them .  I remember when the world use too be real lol  when i was growing up if someone said they used a computer we would called them a nerd and laughed at them and put them in a trashcan.  the only computers we knew was putting 25 cent in a video game when we went out or a Atari 2600 at home  :). When I came on the internet only 50% of the USA had internet anyways  in 2001  and now like 89% has the internet in the USA :P

Netflix loves to tout its fast-growing subscriber base, but the streaming company has been mum about just how popular its shows actually are. Now NBC believes it’s managed to dig up that data using measurements from a third party.

At a Wednesday presentation, NBCUniversal Head of Research Alan Wurtzel revealed estimated viewership information for several of Netflix’s buzzy original shows that premiered during the fall. Marvel’s Jessica Jones averaged 4.8 million viewers between the ages of 18 and 49 during the first 35 days after its November debut, according to the TV analytics company Symphony Advanced Media. Master of None gained 3.9 million viewers during a similar time window, while Narcos attracted 3.2 million viewers in that demographic (the figures miss the first few days of Narcos’ August premiere because tracking began in September).

There shows only have few million views  and the come out once were you can see everyday , we just pirate hem for free the shows that come on cable like The Walking Dead have like 17 million viewers so they really cant compete with cable.and satellite. You can get satlite if  you cant get nothing but dial up. :P

But even as super-speedy broadband internet service has come to dominate American homes, some people still depend on dial-up. Slate.com says that in 2015, nearly 2.2 million subscribers were clinging to dial-up service from AOL, which was the king of dial-up in its heyday.

Our study shows that across the country’s 100 largest metro areas, nearly 450,000 households were using dial-up service in 2014, the most recent year for which Census Bureau figures are available.

Here is a table showing how many metro areas have at least 10,000 dial-up households. Not surprisingly, these metros are among the most populous in the U.S.

Some people do not feel that broadband connectivity is important enough to change to it. They do not use the internet often enough to warrant dropping dial-up,” says Larry Chiagouris, an expert on internet branding who is a marketing professor at Pace University.

So there's millions of people still on dailup  and most of them you never talk too noways  because they dont use it enough to care if they get better. But some places still dont it nothing but daiup out in the sticks lol.

Even California  they say  21 percent of people said they didn’t use the internet at home
